Deliver DD on Wednesday - this is my second baby but first c/s ....
i'm currently taking the percocet and motrin the docs prescribed... noticing that this baby will not stay away for more then 15 min! feeding her is getting annoying bc she's only nursing for 10-15 min at a time bc she can't stay awake. i KNOW newborns sleep a lot, but she almost seems groggy - she looks like i feel from being on these meds! my first daughter wasn't nearly this groggy as a newborn.
guess i'm just wondering if this is normal for c/s babies (or have i been blessed with a really sleepy baby
)
Does anyone else notice their baby is really groggy while they were on the meds? did it change when you went off the meds?
Re: if you took the meds after you c/s....
ditto.
i also was told they can't harm the baby,, just wondering why she can't keep her eyes open! haha ...from day 1 she's been sleeping 5-6 hour stretches at night! guess i shouldn't be "complaining" just totally confused bc it's so different from my first
i started to chart her wet/poop diapers today so when i go for her 1 week checkup i can let them know.
DD was sleepy for a few days, but from what I have now read, that is due to me needing g/a.
Also, percicet doesn't cross to bm from what I have been told.
I didn't find the meds made DD groggy. I agree with this above. If she's so sleepy and not waking to eat, she won't have the energy to wake to eat... it a circle.

It is not true that meds just simply don't pass into your breastmilk, that is misinformation. The truth is that they pass in small amounts and are not known to be harmful to most babies so they are considered safe for BFing moms.
I remember a lot of short feedings and a sleepy baby in the beginning, but I think that is how a lot of newborns are. He wasn't particularly groggy, but just in and out of sleep a lot. My nurses told me that the more quickly you can recover and function the better it is for your baby. I took my meds and everything was fine for me, however I would still mention this to your pedi. Mother's intuition is always good to listen to and it can't hurt.
Percocet Precautions from WebMD: This medication passes into breast milk and may rarely have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Tell the doctor immediately if your baby develops unusual sleepiness, difficulty feeding, or trouble breathing. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Some babies are just sleepy, take your pain meds! She'll snap out of it eventually. My DD was very sleepy as a newborn, for about a month all she did was eat and sleep.
This exactly! I constantly had concerns about my baby being super drowsy. The meds were making me drowsy as well. The nurses kept saying "it is safe, it is safe..." but would never expound on if it made the baby sleepy. I asked for half the dose so baby and I wouldn't be so drowsy and that helped. One of the nurses said my DD had a low heart rate (which I suspected was due to the drowsiness, but the nurses never really listened to my concern) so they put her in the NICU. Nothing was wrong and we were all scared for nothing.

Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
DD was born a month early and was an extremely sleepy baby. We had to really work to keep her awake for feedings. The hospital and my pedi gave me all sorts of tips for keeping her awake. What worked best for us was "naked baby feedings" so she would be slightly chilly and less likely to fall asleep. I would also take her off the breast and sit her up and talk to her if she fell asleep mid-feeding. On very rare occasions if she just couldn't wake up but had hardly eaten anything, I would flick her heel with my fingers.
We had to be really serious about weight gain because DD was born at 5 lbs 9 oz and had gone down to 4 lbs 14 oz by the time we were released. If your DD is a more normal weight and/or is gaining weight acceptably, you probably won't have to be so intense.
