Toddlers: 24 Months+

Eating issue with DS...

He's going to be 3 in December. I cannot get this child to eat very much, he would rather drink milk all day long. I've tried everything. Tonight I sent him to bed without dinner, but gave him a little bit of milk. He doesn't like cold food or hot food, seems to like things cut into small pieces, certain colored things are a no-go, and textures. Any advice?

I've done the muffin tin thing. Was great at first, but that ended quickly.

Re: Eating issue with DS...

  • He was evaluated by Early Intervention and they did say that he had some sensory issues, but not enough of a problem for therapy. The main thing that he was tested for was speech because he still isn't speaking properly for his age...he is getting speech therapy. We do have a 6 month evaluation this week, I will bring it up with them to see what we can do.

  • My pedi would say if all they do is drink milk, then stop the milk. Unless he is very underweight, I'd cut out all milk, assuming the evaluation shows no physical issue.

    Good luck.

I agree with this- it was what I was going to say.  Although DD doesn't have a sensory issue, she was a milkoholic so we cut her intake in half and it did WONDERS!  First thing in the morning she gets water, she doesn't get her milk until she's midway into her lunch.

My DS gets speech therapy and his speech therapist works with him on food.  If it's not part of his ISFP, it may be added at six months.  If not, you can always ask your speech therapist for ideas.  Ours is working on Food Chaining (you can look up the book on Amazon, if you're interested).

Where in IL do you live? We are in the western burbs. Do you go through Early Intervention? We, luckily, have a therapist from Easter Seals. I will look at the book.

Will definitely ween down the milk and juice. Thanks for the advice!!

We are in the Western burbs as well!  We go through through EI since we get speech 2x week, occupational, and developmental.

  • I'm in Villa Park. EI covers the Easter Seals therapist because they're so close to my house. He's doing great with speech and is improving daily. He said Mommy for the first time a few weeks ago...the best word so far!
