C-sections

OP position?

In the cases of a baby in OP position where the mother winds up needing a c section, at what descent station is the baby usually at when it won't go any further?

Also, how much of the head is usually visible by the time they can say for sure that the mother will NOT need a c section due to head positioning?

Re: OP position?

  • pretty high... it probably varies a bit from situation to situation.

If the head is visible at all, I would think that the baby is coming out. By that time, it has cleared the pelvis- there wouldn't be much holding it back.

My son was OP and wouldn't come out. His head wasn't even remotely visible because he hadn't entered the birth canal at all, even after three hours of pushing. I never bothered to ask what station he was at, though.

Can I ask why you're asking these questions? You seem a bit like you're wondering about a specific situation.

  • Mine never went past 0 station, pretty much the same as the PP you couldn't see her had at all.

I pushed for about 3hrs before I had my section.

  • I pushed 4+ hours with my first son, who was OP. According to my records, he was +3 station according to my MW, but was +1 later on per the OBs notes. I think they could see some of his head.

FWIW, I had a VBAC with my second, and he was 2+ pounds heavier and 2 inches longer. In my case, it was all about positioning.

This makes me very hopeful that I'll be able to VBAC. My DD was 9lbs 9oz, OP I pushed for over 2 hours and she was a 0 station. I don't believe they could ever see her head.

  • I don't know what station she was at, so I am no help there.  However, I pushed for 6 hours...Her head was visible in the beginning, but at some point during the pushing, she went back in and her head position changed.  She was OP and she didn't have her chin tucked.  The surgeon had to do quite a bit of yanking on her to get her out and she had a mark on her forehead from where she was stuck.
