Headaches anyone?

Since I hit 2nd tri, I've been having some serious headaches.  I don't think I'm dehydrated because I've really been watching my liquid intake.

I know hormone headaches are a common symptom, so I was just looking for some sympathy.  My fall allergies started flaring up recently too, so I may just have to bite the bullet and start taking Claritin.  I just hate taking over the counter meds (even Tylenol for a headache).  With my thyroid issues, I have to take a lot of medication anyway, so I hate adding more to the mix.

Re: Headaches anyone?

  • Ugh. I'm with you. I keep getting them and they're awful! Especially because normally I hardly ever get headaches - no idea how to handle them.

  • I've been getting them occasionally since the beginning. I totally feel your pain. I haven't taken anything for them though.

Me too.  I feel like a total whiny baby, but I rarely get headaches at all.  My philosophy on headaches is that it is usually your body trying to tell you you are doing something wrong (like being dehydrated or not getting enough sleep, etc.) so I refuse to take Tylenol to feel better.  In this case, though.... I guess it's just pregnancy, which I can't make go away... lol.  So I'll have to take the Tylenol for some relief.

  • I had a migraine on Monday that was absolutely horrible. The doctor actually had to call in Fioricet. However, I wouldn't feel bad taking Tylenol as it doesn't cross the placenta. You could also try drinking some caffeine. They say 300-400 mg is safe and for comparison sake a pepsi is only 32mg. Tea is like 20 some.
  • Man oh man... I've had them off an on but only needed to take Tylenol twice. I never used to have headaches that often prior to being pregnant. . . Like you said, my allergies have kicked in full force too the sinus pressure is joining the party also... Hang in there!

  • You definitely have my sympathy. I'm a migraine sufferer and I've also been having nearly constant headaches since 10 weeks. And I completely agree with you that taking meds stinks, even if they are OTC. If it makes you feel any better, all of my doctors so far have said that the risks of the medication are outweighed by the risks that the constant headaches pose to your body from being in pain. Not much of a consolation but IMO it's better than nothing. I still use tylenol as a last resort for headaches. I have noticed that I get headaches when I'm dehydrated and/or I haven't been eating enough, even when I thought I was. If you're up for some trial and error, the cold compress over the eyes and ice pack or heating pad to the neck can usually do wonders for me. Or take a warm bath. If it's allergy related (which sucks, I understand) have you thought about taking benadryl? You could take it at night so it helps you sleep and you get relief from it all day without being drowsy. Benadryl has always worked better for me than other OTC allergy medicines. GL and hope you feel better!

  • I've also had really bad headaches for the last couple weeks. I have been taking Tylenol sparingly and plan on asking my doctor more about that at my appt on Tuesday. I've also had a little bit of caffeine but I haven't found that to be a big help.

  • I started with headaches at about 9.5 weeks.  There was a period there for a while where I had splitting headaches for about 10 days straight, not fun.  I drink LOTS of water, so I know I'm not dehydrated...Dr said it is just hormonal and to take tylenol as needed.  I did check my blood pressure a few times in the bad phase (Dr did too and it was normal).  I'm still getting them occasionally but not every day anymore.

One thing I find that helps a lot is an ice pack to the back of the neck.  And not staring at the computer, lol.

Me and my Kiwi, both 38.  We struggled with RPL and were blessed with Micah.  I'm a full custody stepmom to Ethan!

  • Yup, I've had a headache since Th afternoon. I have taken Tylenol for it, but it doesn't seem to help. Usually if I have a headache for this long I take Excedrin, but I don't know if that is safe. I figure I might just have to tough it out.

  • I have always had horrible migraines, but it especially sucks now because there isn't much we can do. One tip I got from someone on here is peppermint oil. You rub a little on each temple and some on your forehead, and the cooling affect it has feels amazing.

You won't find it in Vons or any general store (that I searched in at least), DH found it in some herbal store I think..or I'm sure you could find it online :]

No Excedrin, it sucks! That's what normally makes my migraines ago away too. However when I told the doctor how much pain I was in he called in a script for me- made me feel human again.

  • every single day.  i'm so sick of it.  and in addition to the constant tension headaches, i've been getting a migraine about once every 2 weeks now too.  tylenol doesn't seem to be working either.

oh an tylenol DOES cross the placenta.  the fetus can metabolize it though.

  • I've been getting them more frequently the past week or 2. Tylenol helps a little, but I don't like taking it. I also get this weird "head rush" when I bend over to pick something up or lie flat - it's like there's a lot of blood rushing to my head and it makes the headache worse.

  • I have had way more headaches with this pregnancy than my last.  I know lack of sleep, low blood sugar and dehydration have made them worse.  Having a toddler and being pregnant is rough!  I only take meds when the other option is go crazy ;-)

  • Uug, I feel your pain.  I got the bump 12 week e-mail today and it said headaches start to get worse in the 2nd tri, I'm not looking forward to that.  I've had horrible headaches my whole life, but luckily haven't had too many since I've been pregnant.  My doctor said Tylenol is fine, but it doesn't help me much.  I sleep with a huge ice pack wrapped around my head as much as possible and that seems to help a little bit.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • Yes!!! I've had them since second trimester too!  I get a few a week and they last all day.   I also can feel my pulse beating through every part of my body...head, legs, hands..so weird.  I did ask and we are pumping so much more blood and its normal, but doesn't feel so.  Your not alone friend!

  • I've been getting a ton of headaches.  I asked my dr. at my last appointment and she said that there was nothing wrong with taking Tylenol as often as needed.  It's really difficult to deal with 32 unruly 7th graders with a splitting headache, so I've been taking the medicine when I feel like I need to!

  • Me too...horrible headaches, which of course are very common. I am just trying to drink more water because it seems to help and Tylenol doesn't. I also just try to lie down and close my eyes for a while. That helps also.

  • omg, it's nice to see that others are suffering with this too.  umm, sorry, that didn't come out right.  i wish that none of us had to have these headaches.

i've been a migraine sufferer for years and years, since i was a teenager.  i usually take imitrex, can't in pg.  just this week i had a migraine on monday- complete with vomiting, headache on tuesday, migraine with vomiting on wednesday, fine thurs and headache friday and today.  :(

i had always heard about caffeine helping, but never really believed it would help me.  i drank to large cokes on wednesday and it kicked it.  today we were at the state fair all day and i got one, so i got a coke and it went away.  it came back on my drive home so i stopped at mcdonald's and got an iced coffee with no sugar and, poof, it was gone.  i'm a believer now!!

hope we all start feeling better soon!  headaches suck ass.
