Baby Names

Jolie

My husband and I like unusual (but not too unusual) names. No matter how many girl names we add to the list, we can't stop thinking about Jolie Grace. I think it sounds so pretty and feminine and strong. Yes, Angelinia Jolie is a popular celebrity but not sure how much weight to put in that?

 So, honest thoughts?

Re: Jolie

  • Jolie is cute. I like it but not so much with Grace
  • imageJoy2611:

It's unfortunate.  I like Jolie.  However, as a person living in 2011 who would meet your child, I'd be convinced her parents harbored a deep love for Angelina Jolie and, therefore, it makes me want to vote against your pretty choice.

On the other hand, knowing, loving and interacting with a child of that name changes how you view it.  I might forget all about Angelina and her ridiculousness.

All of this.  Jolie immediately brings Angelina Jolie to mind, so it makes the name feel really trendy and celeb-obsessed.  Kind of like the name Aniston.

It is really pretty, though.  Fortunately, there are SO many gorgeous girl names out there.

  • I think it's adorable. If you love it use it! :-)
  • It's french for 'pretty'.  To me it feels akin to naming your child 'Precious'.  Could you go with Julie instead?

  • I love it.  As pp said, it's French and has a lot more meaning than just a celebrity association.  (Besides, are we going to rule out Angelina for this reason, too?)  Grace is a great middle name and it sounds lovely.  I have a new cousin in the family named Jovie which is close and also a new favorite of mine.

  • I love it! Think it's really cute. Our friends have a 5 year old little girl and her name is Jolee. Her dad's name is Joe so I think that's why they did it? But anyways I think it's cute and I've never thought about celebrity when I heard it or say it. JMHO.
  • I think it sounds horrible with a southern accent. I can't like it for that reason. It sounds like "Jo-Lay" and it makes my skin crawl. I have a "step" cousin with this name, but they spell it Jolee, but they pronounce it "Joley" or "Joel-ee" and that's another reason I can not get behind this name.

  • I knew a girl named Jolie, pronounced JO-lee (hard J, emphasis on the Jo) and I liked that very much.

If you're thinking jo-LEE, like Angelina, I'm not a fan.

  • Well Angelina Jolie would certainly prevent me from using the name, and I don't think the Angelina association is going anywhere anytime soon. If I met a Jolie, I would probably think that her parents were big fans.

  • I love it, but I can't get past the immediate Angelina Jolie connection.

  • I agree with pp-I immediately think of Angeline Jolie.

What about name Jolene?  You could call her Jolie as a nn.

  • I'd definitely not use it because of the association.
  • I love Jolie. I think it's a gorgeous name.

I also don't think Angelina Jolie is such a negative association. There are worse people out there. Though I do get why PP would be detered by her.

  • Pretty name, but I would not use it because of Angelina Jolie.  I don't like the actress at all and would not want people to assume I was a huge fan.

  • I have a friend and her daughters name is Jolee. I love it. Either spelling.

  • I love it.  I have a cousin named Jole, which I think is the French spelling.  It's pronounced Jolie.

I wouldn't be swayed by Angelina.

  • I really like it! Jolie is on reserve to be the middle name of our first daughter (if we ever get one). Personally, I dont give a crap that it is attached to a celeb. We know that it has nothing to do with her. My almost 7 week old son's middle name is Kobe but that has NOTHING to do with the basketball player either.
  • I love the name Jolie.  Angelina reference or not.  She is definitely not the worst person to be associated with.

  • I love Joely, spelled like that. Less Angelina, more Fisher.
  • My god-daughter is Jolee Grace, and I love it but I am biased.
  • I know a Jolie, and her full name is Jolianna. I think it's beautiful.

  • The association honestly doesn't bother me.
It didn't even come to mind when I first read it

    I like it :)

  • I graduated HS with a Jolie.  She got the "best dressed" senior superlative and was very artistic.  She's a kickass photographer now.  I have good associations with the name from before anyone ever heard on Angelina.

  • Jolie is a pretty name. In fact, it means pretty in French. But with the popularity of Angelina, I wouldn't use it.
