Trying to Get Pregnant

Great Sperm Race

Ok so this video is amazing and very eye opening when TTC.  It mentioned how the sperm go through the journey then can spend hours even days in the fallopian tubes until the egg is released then the scent or receptors basically send signals to sperm to come fertilize it.  Well my question is if the sperm can wait then what if you have intercourse a week before o and some sperm get in then daily until o can more sperm continue to get in?  I would assume the older sperm start to die??

Re: Great Sperm Race

  • I don't have an exact answer to your question, but too much BD can lower sperm count, so that is something to take into consideration!

  • I would infer that because sperm "can" live for 5 days doesn't mean they will. So, I would assume that having sex EOD during that fertile window will insure that some sperm will be there if the ones that got there first died out.

  • Yeah I have heard that...we are starting another cycle and are working out our BDing schedule! Last month we only BDed once on my ovulation day so we are going to try more often this month...but aren't quite sure how much is just enough but not too much??vvMy husband works nights till about 12 so we are thinking about combining AM's and PM's??  Anyone have any advice on this.

I should O on the 29th or 30th (at least this is the time that my Clearblue Monitor gave me peak days last month)  So we are thinking of BDing the 24th and 25th PM then skipping the 26th, BDing the 27th AM, 28th PM then 29th PM, 30th PM and 1st AM.

Too much or just being thorough???

Unless your husband has a known sperm issue, sex every day is fine.

Yes, they all don't keep living until O. Each batch has its own life span. And 5 days is fairly optimistic. Three is more likely, due to the envirnoment of the vagina and cervix.

  • Thanks for the great advice.  I think we will stick with our schedule (as long as O come's at the expected date)!!

We are excited!! Good luck ladies!

Oh, really?  That's good to know - I'd always heard too often could make it temporarily go down.

  • This is semi-unrelated to your post, but I am watching the video right now, and it's not making me feel very optimistic.  Please tell me it gets better?   On that note......Embarrassed....returning to my video.....

  • Random tid-bit: The oldest sperm to live in a woman's body was two weeks old. Not saying this is normal, but I figured I'd share :P

Although the video showed how challenging conception is...it somehow made me feel excited about trying again soon...just how amazing it will feel when it really happens for us.  Also we are doing a multivitamin for DH and he is going to stay away from heavy alcohol in the next two weeks prior to O-ing.  Also the portion of the video I thought might also help us is when they talked about "getting rid" of the old sperm if you know what I mean.  Me and DH have conflicting schedules so BDing doesn't happen often, which makes me think since last month we only tried once...on the day of O.  So maybe because we waited those were all the old slow spermies!!  Anways thats the plan this month!!! :D

This is true for us too. DH travels a lot for work, so it is always possible that he will be gone around O day, which seems to be the case this month.  He leaves today and won't be back till Monday, so the plan was to BIO until he leaves and pray that some "supersperm" make it till O. Stick out tongue I definitely thought the video was informative and interesting. Puts things in perspective for sure.
