Do you give your toddler chocolate milk?

R has never had it....am I the minority mom who isn't in a hurry to let them have it?

He loves his milk, I don't want to start a battle over white or chocolate. I have seen so many young kids drinking chocolate milk while eating out......and I remember the shock on the waitresses face when R was 10 mos old. We were in a restaurant in MO and she asked if he wanted chocolate milk, I am sure I gave her a look when I said no! haha

Does your LO drink it?

Re: Do you give your toddler chocolate milk?

  • DD has had it once with me.  We were in KFC when we drove down to PA that had those Extreme Milks that are flavored chocolate or vanilla.  And I thought maybe a vanilla flavored milk would be weird....but now I kinda wonder if it is plain milk and they just write that?  I have no idea.  Oh, and I ended up drinking probably 3/4 of it bc she kept asking for my water instead haha.

She is perfectly happy with regular milk and water, and she isn't a wonderful drinker anyway so I don't want to decrease the amount of water and milk she drinks by having her wanting chocolate milk.  But if we are out and that was what was given to us or available, I wouldn't have a problem with her drinking it occasionally.

  • He's had it twice. Both times were as a reward while we were out. We dont keep it in the house.
  • Reed has it occasionally (thanks to MIL for introducing).  If he sees it somewhere, i.e. Subway or something he will beg for it. It is mostly a treat if we are at a restaurant. He isn't a big milk drinker so sometimes I wonder if the trade off is ok since at lease he is getting the milk that way.
  • He gets it at my mom's, as a treat when he sleeps over. I have never given it to him at home, except once when he was sick and asked for it (he hadn't eaten anything or even drank milk in 2 days)

Evan also loves milk, and I'm really not worried about him wanting cocoa milk over white. He kinda knows baka gives it to him, and usually asks for it there, but never has at home.

Oh, he also had quite a bit of hot cocoa at home last winter.... but not the gross processed packets.... milk, a little sugar, and good quality melted dark chocolate heated on the stove top. Yum... I might have to dig and see if I have any chocolate in the baking cupboard and make a cup of that for myself on this cool evening! ;)

  • Nope, she hasn't had it yet that I know of. I'm trying to keep as many sweets from her as I can which is a chore these days...the child has become obsessed somehow! I hardly ever give her "treats" but first thing in the morning she says "I want a popsicle"....gotta love the ILs sometimes for introducing those things!
  • I won't freak out if someone gives her some but she has never had it yet.  She likes her milk a lot as is so I don't see the need to add chocolate.

  • Claire has had it a few times as a treat when we're out at a restaurant.  We don't keep it in the house.

  • Tyler doesn't drink much milk, he doesn't and never has eaten much of anything.  So he does have Ovaltine Milk a couple times a week, but I make it pretty like on the Ovaltine.  Brianna drinks some ovaltine milk, but she likes her regular milk.  I do buy chocolate milk as a special treat when we travel or go camping.  It is much sweeter and richer than ovaltine.  Since the kids are usually too excited to eat or drink when we are on vacation, I always know they will at least drink the chocolate milk.  And I think it is one of those things they will always remember when they grow up, having a special treat of chocolate milk by the camp fire.
  • I have offered it to eve. She is uninterested. She'd rather drink white milk.. one day she was cranky and I was making myself coffee so I made her some hot cocoa and she took two sips and refused it amd asked for water.

  • Charlie has it about once a week. I'm not too worried. Usually it is made at home with a tiny squirt of organic chocolate syrup so barely any flavor.I usually have a glass as part of my recovery from running so I'll make him a glass too. And he'll sometimes have some when we are out at a restaurant, but we don't go out often so I'm not too concerned with it.

And flame away but Paul had some last night & loved it!  I was making some for Charlie for dinner and he wanted some for Paul too so we made him a very weak cup.

I figure the amount of chocolate syrup I add is about 5g of sugar or less. Not too worried about that.

  • I got it for him once a few weeks ago because it was the only lowfat milk where we were. He wanted nothing to do with it. Fine by me.
  • Chelsea has never had it. She loves regular milk and water so I'm fine with keeping her on those. I know her personality well enough to know that if she has it once, she'll never stop bugging me for it! She has a major sweet tooth.

  • of course my son has had it.  He loves it.  We get it every so often b/c I love it.
  • nope!! i see kids in diapers drinking soda at restaurants and i think OMG!!!
  • My daughter (3 year old) loves milk and prefers regular milk over chocolate but she has definitely had it. In fact she asked for it today but I told her no and she didn't seem to care. There are times when she might have it once/week and stretches where she won't have for months. It's not something I'm all that concerned about.

In my eyes soda & chocolate milk are 2 totally separate things.

And since becoming a parent I've learned to judge a whole lot less. You never know what someone's situation is...

Oh yeah, totally different! I haven't banned chocolate milk, just haven't offered it yet.

  • The boys both have my love of chocolate.  Alex has had it a few times and he loves it.  But he doesn't get it too often.
