2nd time moms who BF

Was BFing way easier the second time around, or is it just me?

With Rosie I had crazy oversupply with constant leaking.  I used those breast shells because I was so sore, and I would leak so much that they would fill up with enough milk that I could literally pour out a few ounces that way.  This time around, I was engorged for a few days, and now I'm back to normal. I'm already in my smaller nursing bras that I bought when Rosie was about 6 months old.

It almost makes me worried that I don't have enough of a supply.  I know I'm fine because Thomas gained enough weight and is doing just fine in the diaper department, but I feel too normal, it's weird!

Was it easier for you the second time around?

  • oh yeah..totally. We even dealt with Leah being tongue tied and needing to see an ENT in order to get her "snipped" so she could nurse. We have to suppliment with her too...so an oversupply sounds awesome to me...but mentally I was in such a better place.

  • First time - I lasted 4 hours after I left the hospital before I broke down and DH bought formula.

Second time - I BF for 5.5 months.

There was a great lactation consultant available the second time around...plus I was more relaxed and not as neurotic.

  • I pumped both times (6 months the first time, 16 months the second baby).

The second time I felt like I was a little more in control, but I started ovulating around 6 months, and I could tell (CM, headaches, big hit in supply).

I started taking fenugreek, oatmeal, etc. to up my supply but by a year it was really tough.  By 15 months I could barely pump enough for 1 bottle a day and I was lucky that DD was accepting of cow's milk.  16 months in my body was definitely done (getting blood in my milk :( ).

I will say though too, with baby #2, I had a c-section and they were saying my milk wouldn't be in until like 72 hours, and after 1 day I was like, get me a pump now.  They didn't want to believe it but my milk was so ready!

  • My experiences were the opposite!  I had just enough milk for DS, he latched well, was an easy nurser, etc.  DD had latch issues, I had too much milk, and she was wicked.  I cried at least once a week for months trying to get to a year.  She bit, twisted, scratched, etc.  She also nursed more often.

  • Second time around was SO much easier for me.  Justin did not nurse well after I went back to work and I ended up having to EP.  It was also very painful with him.  I would say I never had a great supply with either of my boys but I was able to make it work.

  • definitely easier. I didn't really have an oversupply either time though. I did get pretty engorged with N, but it was better after a few days.. With Eve we struggled with her latching and with weight gain and it was just never easy really. With N, she latched right away and fed well, but I did get really sore/cracked nipples and then mastitis because of it.. but still.. it was way easier.

This is the same for me except change Thomas to Audrey =)

It always worried me with Stella too when I didn't feel engorged anymore but I was able to BF for 10 months so I'm hoping to do the same this time around.  Audrey had a little bit of a hard time latching but we're doing great now!
