Baby Names

Clementine Elizabeth

What do you think?  Last name is Smith.  If she doesn't like Clementine, she has a middle name that is classic, plus lots of nickname options (my fave being Ellie).

Re: Clementine Elizabeth

  • Personally I do not care for it, reminds me of the oranges. But if you like it go for it, it's your baby.
  • I would switch it to Elizabeth Clementine Smith.

  • I just can't get it up for that name, but whatever floats your boat.

Personally I would never want to name my child something that I have to justify by saying 'if she doesn't like it she can call herself something else'.

  • I love the name Clementine.  I think you should use it as the FN, particularly because your last name is Smith.  There won't be many Clementine Smiths out there, but there will be many, many Elizabeth Smiths.

  • I like Clementine, but pairing it with Smith doesn't flow super well for me. Something about the m sound, I can't put my finger on it,

  • I really like the name Clementine.  I probably won't use it myself (something tells me DH wouldn't be on board), but I think it is lovely.

  • Love Clementine, but I'm not crazy about it with Elizabeth. I think perhaps a shorter, softer name would sound better with it.  If you really like Ellie, maybe:

    Clementine Elise

    Clementine Estelle/Estella

    Clementine Elena

    Clementine Eliza

  • I like the name Clementine - it has kinda grown on me.  Not sure if I would use it personally, but it is a nice name.  I really like Elizabeth as a middle name.  I don't normally consider Ellie a nn for Elizabeth though, but I suppose it works.
  • I ADORE Clementine, but DH hates it (as do most of my friends - whatever!) I love the full name.

  • It's not bad until I think about Eternal Sunshine and Jim Carrey yelling "Clem?  Clem? Tangerine?!"

Love the movie and the name fit Kate Winslet's character but I don't like it for a real-life child.

  • I absolutely love it. Clementine is a guilty pleasure name for me, I really dig it! Elizabeth is ok with it, but to me it's a filler name and a bit of a mouthful with a hefty name like Clementine.
  • I'm biased because I LOVE Clementine but I think it's great, especially with a short, common last name. I think Elizabeth is pretty but the -th endings in both Elizabeth and Smith is not the best flow. Other than that, it's a great name. Even though I prefer the full name, Clementine can be shortened to several nicknames, Emmy being a mainstream choice. Good luck!

  • Clementine is a guilty pleasure name for me - meaning I really like it but don't have the guts to use it. Kudos to you for going outside the norm. If you love it, that's all that matters (well, and hopefully she'll love it too).

  • I love Clementine (it is on my long list). I love Elizabeth. Don't care for them together so much--too clunky for me. Someone suggested Clementine Lily to me the other day... But Lily might be too matchy with your DD's name. :)

  • Both names are fine, but I think it's sort of a mouthful.

  • I LOVE Clementine and agree with pps that there are several nns that you could use if she wants something more mainstream.  But honestly, if I was named Clementine, I would go by Clementine because it is awesome.

  • I really like Clementine, and I hope you use it. It's such a gutsy choice right now. Choosing Elizabeth as FN would be a shame for someone considering such a (legitimately) unique name. I also think that with the LN Smith, you're better off choosing something that won't be shared by classmates.

I also think Clementine isn't going to be obscure for very long. I see it a lot on here and it seems to have the hipster vibe that people like. So if you're worried about being too "out there", I wouldn't be.

And finally, I don't like the flow of Clementine Elizabeth. I think it would work best with a two syllable MN. I like the previous suggestion of Clementine Elise. Clementine Audrey or Clementine Emma would be pretty too.

  • I love the name Clementine and it's on my list for twins since we already have a girl name picked out. I say go for it!
