TTC after 35

Opinions Needed

Turning 41 in December.  No insurance cov. for IVF.  I am allowed 5 more cycles of IUI.  Should I even bother since my RE said highly unlikely to get pregnant from IUI at my age.

Re: Opinions Needed

  • imageWonderRed:
How did he determine you were highly unlikely?  Just based on overall opinion that it's not possible at this age (I'm 41 also) or because he did some testing?  If that's just his general opinion I would look for a new RE who will specifically look at you and your situation.

This! Blanket statements based on age of 41 alone is ridiculous.

  • thanks for your input, hes going by statistics for my age group.  i have unexplained infertility, all my tests check out fine and my body responds well to injectables.  alot of these dr.'s push straight for the ivf at my age and im finding it very frustrating

  • At age 41, it's likely that there are egg quality issues, and even IVF is no guarantee --- basically, it's a matter of cycling over and over again until you find one or two of the "good" eggs.

If you have no diagnosed DOR issues and are responding to the stims for IUI, and your insurance pays for it, absolutely you should keep trying it.  Are there other RE's in your area that you could talk to for a second opinion?  It might be worth it for your peace of mind.

  • thanks again for the input, i think i will seek out a 2nd opinion perhaps at Columbia in NYC
  • I see you are from Rockland, I am from Orange Cnty.  What RE are you seeing?
  • I did 1 IUI in the summer of 2010, left that RE, tood a break to get my mind back and did IUI this past July, Aug and Sept.  Waiting to see what the outcome will be on my Sept. IUI.

Just a helpful hint about the quote button. It is hard to know who you are responding to if you don't use the quote button. It is next to the respond button.  Once you open the box, place the cursor after the quote bracket and type away!

  • I'm 43 and my RE kinda said the same thing. I did one IUI and called the office freaking out cause I didnt want to do another IUI if she thinks I'm wasting my time. She told me that one girl did IUI with DS 5 times with no luck but another girl "my" age did one DS IUI and got pregnant. So I'm doing another IUI. I'm so tired I forgot what I was trying to say..haaha. No rhyme or reason...

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

  • Im going through something similar now too.  I feel like the RE just took us right to IVF. I think they really want to help but since I am new to all this I feel very unsure!  I would say do it if your insurance is paying.  I am out of pocket on all of mine!  Good luck!

  • i went to dr. choi at columbia in manhattan.  i like all the docs there.

i am 42, was dx with dor, high fsh, etc. etc. i told them i didn't have IVF coverage, but unlimited IUI benefits.  they were willing to do as much or as little as i was able to do.

fyi ... the cycle i got pg, my fsh and something else was too high for stimulation meds ... so instead i did acupuncture, columbia monitored my lone little follie, we did an unmedicated IUI and et voila ... i'm 26 weeks pg.

    please get a second opinion.

I go down to NJ to Valley Hospital Fertility Center.  If you are thinking about going to the city, look into Weil Fertility Center at Cornell Univ.  They have a good reputation with DOR patients.

  • thanks everyone for making  me feel like there is still hope!
  • One last chime in for why IUI can work.  I am DOR and can't produce many eggs even with IVF. I only got 2 after taking $11K worth of drugs plus the $11K for the IVF(insurance paid for it).  It seems like a waste of time to go through all that(IVF) and spend all that money OOP for 2 eggs when I get one naturally. We may go back to trying on our own for a while if the final IVF doesn't work. You never know when that good egg will pop up.

  • We're doing IUIs despite the low chance of success because they are partially covered as opposed to IVF. There's always a chance. If this RE won't do them, another will.

That's really wonderful and so encouraging to know as we are going to do an unmedicated IUI next cycle (assuming this cycle is a bust).

Only 3 more months until you meet you new little one!

As long as the people involved can deal with the constant hope/disappointment cycle, this is my feeling too.
