Suddenly clingy after 2 weeks of school?

DD has been going to pre-k3 for almost 2 weeks now, and up until this morning was so ready to be rid of me at drop off she'd barely stop for a kiss before running off to play.  This morning, she was clinging, crying, begging me to stay.  It was so unlike her I wasn't sure what to do.  I know she was a little constipated yesterday and the classroom noise was bothering her at one point, but I couldn't think of anything else that could have turned her against school so quickly.  I'm half expecting a call this morning that she's running a fever or just threw up all over the classroom.  Has anyone had this type of thing happen out of the blue?  If so, what was the reason, and did they go back to "normal" quickly or did this become the new routine?

Re: Suddenly clingy after 2 weeks of school?

  • Last year when my youngest started preschool she was SO excited.  Her sister had gone to the same school & she was familiar with everyone there, so we didn't anticipate any problems.  A couple of weeks in she started resisting & actually refused to go to her after school dance class (held at the school- and which she had taken the previous spring with her sister).  She ended up being so tweaked about dance that I decided to pull her- just thought it was too much to add the extracurricular right then.

But as for school, the important thing to do is just to keep reassuring/ reinforcing that they are a big kid now, and big kids go to school.  Make drop off quick & dirty- don't linger, it will make it worse.  It didn't last super long, but even after she 'came around' every once in awhile she'd say something like "I don't want to go to school, I want to stay home with you."  I think your situation sounds very normal & will resolve itself before you know it!
