Cloth Diapering

Wet pail?

We don't have a washer/dryer, and have to take our diapers to a laundromat a long walk away, so we only wash diapers about twice a week (sometimes less...)

Obviously, they start to stink after a bit- to the point where I hate to open the pail and let the stench out.

DH wants to have a giant bucket of water to throw them all into- a wet pail- when we do laundry, he would dump the water in the tub and just take the wet diapers.

Has anyone else done a wet pail? Ideas? warnings? any advice appreciated!

  • Wet pails are highly discouraged because they pose a drowning hazard.

This.  You could put something in the pail to absorb the odor.  Most CD websites sell products like that.

  • Yep.  Ditto this.  Also if you have anything other than prefolds or flats,  I've heard that it isn't good to let the PUL or snaps to be submerged in water as it can weaken them.

To help cut down on smells, I rinse all the pee diapers before throwing them into the diaper pail.  This rinses off a good deal of the pee so it won't break down into stinky ammonia.  I think it helps, but my pail is far from smelling like roses LOL!
