Anyone here supplement w/ formula?

Does anyone supplement w/ formula?  If so how do you do it (one, two, three feedings a day)?  Has it impacted your supply?  TIA!

Re: Anyone here supplement w/ formula?

  • I do, but I didn't start until LO was about 2 months old. It didn't impact my supply, but my supply was never great to begin with. We usually give 2 ounces sometime between 2 and 8am (after I BF or while I get some extra sleep, 2 ounces is about a half feeding) and then 1-2 bottles containing 3-4 ounces in the early evening.

We don't have a set schedule, it just depends on LOs needs and how my supply is at the time.

  • We have from the beginning because DS was a preemie and I had major supply issues.  At first I was putting him on the breast every feeding, then offering the formula, but eventually we settled into a routine of formula at night and BM during the day.  We still keep back-up bottles of formula in the diaper bag, so on occasion he gets it during the day too.  I pumped every 3 hours until about 2.5 months, now I'm pumping every 3-4, with longer stretches at night now that he is STTN.  So basically he was on 50/50 BM and formula until he started dropping night feedings.  Now he is down to about 1-2 bottles in a 24hr period.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I'm having to supplement right now because LO wasn't gaining weight.  I was using a nipple shield for the first few weeks due to flat nipples, and he wasn't able to pull a lot of milk through the shield, so my supply went down some.  Now that we are just getting to nurse without the shield, my supply isn't that great, so we are supplementing with 2 oz a few times a day, if he still seems hungry after nursing.  Hoping to get my supply back up and drop the formula completely, but my poor nipples are killing me :(
