Chai Tea Latte...

My usual go to drink to get me feeling like fall...

Question: Does it have caffeine in it? Do you think a tall would be okay?

Re: Chai Tea Latte...

  • yep. most chai tea is caffinated. I was told by my doctor that I can have 2 servings of caffine a day...I don't have that much, just a little in the am to help with the constipation. I would talk to your doctor;) Good luck!

Yes, there is caffeine in it because it's black tea, I think it's only about 20mg per 8oz, so definately do-able. Unfortunately, baby doesn't like it too much so I've been without :..(

  • YES! Lots of caffeine. I was told by a SB employee that it has more caffeine than coffee. And there is not an option for decalf chai tea, obviously.

:( Love them also, but have switched to other drinks that I can decaffeinate. Maybe SB website would tell you more about the caffeine content.

  • Looks like about 75 mg of caffeine in a tall, per SB. So less than a tall coffee. :)

  • It is black tea, so yes there is caffeine.  It should not have as much caffeine as coffee has, unless SB is adding something to it.

I have one from my Keurig or make my own (when I feel like grinding up the spices) 2x/week.  I've cut out all other caffeine.

  • I don't think it would be a problem.

  • I've been drinking one cup of coffee in the morning and not much else caffeine-wise.

I did stumble upon this site https://www.energyfiend.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine which, while I'm not sure how reputable, does say that a chai tea latte has 75 mg in a tall. In my books, that's totally fine, however, it's an entirely personal decision whether one drinks caffeine during pregnancy or not.

Personally, i don't over-do it. I have my one cup in the a.m. and was craving a pumpkin spiced latte as an afternoon snack, so got decaf, which I realize has some caffeine still in it, but nowhere near the full amount a regular would

From research I've done 200-300mg a day is safe. Again, personal choice.

  • Quick note-- if you see a tea that says "tisane", it's almost always caffeine free.

A tisane tends to have more floral and fruity flavors, and have like dried fruit and flowers in them.  Really yummy!

  • In the asian section of my grocery store there is a liquid Chia Tea that you mix with milk and it tastes exactly the same.  They do make it in a caffeine-free, which I believe is made with a red tea instead.  It doesn't really taste much different and it's cheaper to make at home!

  • I drank Chai with dd and will continue to do it during this pregnancy. You can find it caffeine free but it doesn't bother my acid reflux (I had this before pregnancy) and never bothered dd. It is up to you but I wouldn't be overly worried as tea has less caffeine then coffee. If it seems to bother you or baby (when you can feel him/her) then I wouldn't drink it but if it doesn't seem to be a problem go for it!

  • Tazo - the company that makes the chai latte for Starbucks, also has it in the store in a concentrate (not the bags), and it comes in decaf.  Just add a little of this, and a little milk/water and it will taste the same, you can make it in the microwave!  It's much cheaper too. :)  I love it and drink it when I'm having a Chai tea craving...
