Two Under 2

Should I bother trying to get rid of the binky for DD#1?

DD is completely dependent on her binky.  She will NOT fall asleep without it.  LO#2 is due in early January and we're debating if it's even worth it to try to loose the binky before the baby comes since the baby will most likely have a binky!

Anyone have experience either way with this?

Thanks!

  • we didn't even think about taking #1's paci away- wasn't worth it imo.

she's never tried to steal #2's & she relys on it less & less as she gets older.

she only likes it for sleeping now & she'll probably be done with it by the end of the year.

  • We didnt get rid of #1s paci and I am SO glad we didnt. #2 never took to a paci, and it's been such a huge comfort when DS is teething. He's starting to self wean off of it which has worked out better than listening to him cry for it.

  • DS only uses it now when he's in bed.  He's teething and likes to chew on it more than suck.  I'm not worried about taking it away right now.  As long as he only uses it to fall asleep, I'm ok with it.

  • We didn't have to deal with this per se. But I would restrict just to naptime/bedtime first. Then go cold turkey. That's what we did with DS at 18 months and he cried the first couple of days without it but did great from then on. DD never wanted a paci, even though I wanted her to take one bc it seemed to make things easier with DS. She does suck on a lovey now so we will have to take it away eventually I guess.

  • DS1 loves his binky and I figured getting a new sibling would be enough shocking change and that the binky might help him cope.  He did fine w/ the baby and now 3 months later we have weaned him down (jjust this week) to binky at nap and bedtime only.  He'll be losing it completely by his b-day.  Baby has a binky but DS knows it's not his.  Sometimes he tries to take it when he can't have/doesn't have his own but he doesn't put up one iota of fight when I ask him to give it back to the baby.
  • We took DD1's paci away about a month after DD2 was born (so around 13.5 months).  It really wasnt that traumatic and stealing the baby's paci's hasnt been an issue (though she does play a game where he puts it in her mouth for a second to get me to run after her!).

The BEST thing i ever did was have them take different paci's - DD1 used the green soothies so we started DD2 on nuks from the beginning.  Their shape and feel is very different so the baby's pacis dont really tempt the toddler.

  • My two will be about exactly what yours will be and DH and I just had this discussion.

Our DD also ONLY has hers in bed (and sometimes in the car if we are traveling). She is a late teething (only has 4 teeth at 16.5 months) so we decided to keep it for her to have as teething comfort versus resorting to drugs and things.

  • I cut back gradually - only in bed at end.  I read Bye Bye Binkie "manual" online and followed it loosely.  I cut the nipple part gradually over a few weeks and it totally worked.  She was interested in DS's and grabbed it a few times when he wasn't using it.  Now she has no interest and I don't have to worry about her taking it.  I wanted to get rid of it anyway.

This is a GREAT idea and I am totally stealing it!  DD only uses her binky for naps/bedtime right now and we are going to try to get rid of it in the next few weeks.  I want to get rid of it with plenty of time before DS comes.  We are going to try the Bye Bye Binky method too.  I feel like, if we don't get rid of it before #2 comes, then she will be on it for way too long.  She also is starting to get really attached to them, she normally will put them in her crib when it's time to go downstairs and today she threw the biggest tantrum ever over it and that was almost enough for me to just throw them all away right then.
