starting solids?

Have any of yall started solids with your LO? How is it going?  I just started organic brown rice cereal yesterday because my son has been so hungry after feedings. Part of me wonders if it's still too soon, I know most websites say generally between 4-6 mo. I was hoping to make it closer to 6 than 4, but these meds I'm on are decreasing my supply :/

Re: starting solids?

  • If you're struggling with milk supply, I definitely wouldn't introduce solids now.  You want him nursing as much as possible to get your milk supply back up!

  • I'm still nursing as usual, and pumping a lot at work - but yesterday he was screaming and screaming after each nursing session and I had nothing left. DH gave him some very diluted rice with breastmilk and he calmed down. We've done 2 sessions of rice/milk after nursing. I'm pretty sure it's the medicine. I went from pumping 4.5 oz a session to barely 2 :( It's pretty devastating. I dont know if I should give formula or stick with the rice. Im seeing his dr on Friday though, hopefully he can help.

  • I read something somewhere that it is preferable to give solids over formula if you must supplement.  But it was nutrient-packed solids like avocado, not rice cereal. I can't find the link now.

I would try to call LLL.  They can have someone call you and discuss options.  Have you tried boosting your supply with fenugreek, oatmeal, power pumping?

  • I emailed some LLL leaders in my city, but I havent heard anything back. Yes, Im doing 3 bowls of oatmeal per day, Mothers Milk tea, the pills (I cant remember the name, blue bottle) AND Im pumping every 3 hours at work. Im definitely trying! Solids are so confusing, some sites say start with rice because it is the least likely food to cause allergy but then I have also heard to ditch the rice and do a fruit or veggie. I hope LLL gets back to me! Thanks for your responses yall :)
