Don't want to gain 40 lbs again

With my first pregnancy I gained around 40 lbs... stopped weighing myself near the end because it was getting depressing. I do not want to gain that much with this pregnancy - even 5 lbs less would be nice. I weigh less now than I did at this point with my first, but I'm scared because I feel like I was working out more then. I get to the gym about 3 days/week now and I'm pretty good about watching what I eat. Just need to stay on track I guess.

Re: Don't want to gain 40 lbs again

  • 40lbs isn't too bad. I gained 40lbs and it freaked me out at the time but I actually lost the weight really quick. So I don't think the actual scale weight is that big a deal as the eating right and exercising. Being fit and eating well will go a much longer way in your recovery after the baby is born. I have a friend who gained more during the pregnancy that she exercised than the one that she didn't, but what she lost it faster and recovered quicker the pregnancy that she gained more and exercised.

  • Try not to freak out.  I gained 52+ with my first and 40 with my second.  15 of that 40 came in the last three weeks as I had high bp and was seriously retaining water.  I was under my pre-pregnancy weight in 2 weeks.

  • I'm using myfitnesspal.com to track my eating/exercising, and it's great. I realized that I was eating a lot more daily calories than I thought I was. I also like that it keeps track of my iron, calcium, protein and fiber intake. If you have an iphone, you can even scan grocery bar codes and it will automatically add them for you.

As pp said, it sounds like you don't need to be worried. But this is a good option for feeling a little more in control of your diet.

  • I am with you. I gained FIFTY pounds last pregnancy. I took care of myself but exercised very moderately and probably indulged too much. It all came off easily within months. That said, I am not doing that this time - I weigh 5 lbs less than my pre-pg weight last time, am watching what I eat and am working out much more (which I was doing before I got pg this time). I am still nervous because it seems a lot of weight gain during pg is out of our control  due to bloating, water retention, etc. Also I am starving all the time. Oh well. I am aiming for 30 lbs max this time.

  • I gained 65 (aaak!) pounds when I was pregnant.  I'm actually 6 pounds below my pre-preg weight now.  I also use myfitnesspal.com-it's AWESOME! Try not to stress too much about it though and just be conscious of what you eat and some moderate exercise (which you're probably doing all of that anyways!)

I am using MFP as well... This site is absolutely awesome to track your calories and exercise. There is another site called babyfit.com I signed up but haven't had much time to dedicate to it.

This happened to me.  I was on bed rest with DD1 and I gained 35lbs.  I had an easy delivery and pretty easy recovery, but it took awhile to get my abdominal strength back.  I worked out the entire time that I was pregnant with DD2 and gained 40lbs.  I had a rough delivery with DD2 (had some crappy nurses and a doc, who had her head in the clouds).  The first 24 hours were rough (you can have more cramping and bleeding with subsequent deliveries), but after that, everything was a breeze.  I didn't loose abdominal strength and had no problems keeping up with the toddler, while juggling a newborn.
