Pregnant after IF

How do they find out a baby is breech?

If they don't do more standard u/s after the a/s.
Do they go by touch? Really? Are they that good?
It didn't occur to me to ask since I'm way to far from that. I understand they can flip so much still rigth?

  • They'll do an u/s to determine the position of the baby.

But wasn't the common response on a post below that most practices don't do any more routine ultrasounds. I would consider your answer that.

OB's are all different, but even before my problems arose I was to have u/s every four weeks after the A/S.  So that's another 4-5 after the A/S...

  • Yes, they are usually good enough to be able to tell by touch. It's amazing what they can feel. Usually you have a pretty good idea of where the baby's head and butt are, since they are big and firm.

If you google "Pregnancy abdominal palpation" you can find some resources and see some videos about how doctors/midwives learn to do this.

ETA: With my 1st pregnancy, I didn't have any ultrasounds after the anatomy scan. It was really obvious my son was head down at the end of pregnancy. I could feel his head low in my abdomen and his butt was prominent up top.

  • My OB said near the end he would be able to tell by feel if the baby was breech or not. He said that if he's ever unsure, he will do ultrasounds to check, but apparently, once babies get nice and big it is easy to tell how they're situated to a trained touch. I thought that was pretty cool!

Ditto. The head tends to feel like a baseball (hard & round) and the butt is just hard. Sometimes they have a tough time distinguishing the two if the baby is situated oddly. They generally won't send you for an u/s to confirm how they "think" the baby is situated until you are getting close to the end. In my case, my appt this week was the "make or break" for her to turn before scheduling a c/s. The doc was 99% sure she was breech but just wanted that confirmation before having me call the scheduling person.

I guess my experience was different, as I was high risk and I got an u/s every 2 weeks up until 32w and then I got an u/s every week. I just figured that they would do an u/s to determine position.

Good luck! I hope your baby flips. :)

Wow, that's impressive. It makes sense now.
I figured that MoM and high risk ladies have a lot more scheduled u/s than us with regular pregnancies.

    Thanks for the responses.
