Food Allergy

only symptom: not gaining weight...

Anyone's LO have this and end up with a food allergy/intolerance or other GI issue?  They're about to start testing my DD sine she's not gaining weight (17.5 lbs at 16 months).  She has no other symptoms, so I don't understand how there could be an issue.

Thanks!

  • Yes - there could be a food allergy/intolerance.  My LO has Eosinophilic Esophagitis.  In English, this means an inflammation of the esophagus caused by one of three things - food allergy, environmental allergy, or severe acid reflux.

He had no other symptoms of any type of food allergy.  He was on diary based formula (no swelling/vomiting), ate baby foods with dairy, soy, etc., we had no idea.  He was diagnosed as failure to thrive around 5 months and had a feeding tube placed, which is when we found out about the EE.

The other fun thing I've learned about allergies is that 25% of children will test negative on the skin test & blood test, yet still have an allergy.

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Emergency ileostomy 11/28/10, CF dx on 12/3/10 and ileostomy takedown 1/24/11, feeding tube placed 7/1/11...still going strong! Little one lost 5w5d, 5/27/2012. CP 8/26/2012
  • Does she ever look like she's in pain? tummy ache? maybe you think it's reflux or something else?

the only time i have heard that being the only symptom is when it is celiac disease.  But usually that comes with diarrhea...

Thankfully they are looking at everything. You just never know.

Good luck and hope they find out why.

btw - i swear by avocados. Very healthy fat. my son sometimes eats one avocado a day and skips dinner and i feel completely comfortable with that.  But he didn't start eating avocados until he was about 14 months old.

She never looks like her tummy's hurting.  We do lots of avocado, olive oil, eggs, whole milk & yogurt.  I can't think of anything else to do to get her to gain weight! She eats all the time and doesn't appear to have any digestive issues.  I hope it's either nothing or they figure something out!

these are all good fats..    Have you tried going to a GI?  I guess it wouldn't hurt to get her tested for allergies but i can't imagine that being the reason.. Hopefully it's nothing. Some kids are just naturally petite.  keep us posted.
