Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Zantac users...

I just go my LO on Zantac for acid reflux and I am wondering if anyone has used this medication for their babies? Please let me know what the results were and if it worked for you.

Re: Zantac users...

  • My DS has been on it since 2 weeks old.  He is a different baby!  The down side to it (as most meds) is the dose changes with weight gain, so depeniding on your baby, the dose may need to be increased on the monthly basis.   I also have an older DD and she was on it too.  I have found it to be a life saver!  It also might take a week or two before you see the full result of the meds.  It works, but not for every baby.  I have a friend who's DS had to be switched from Zantac to Axid. Hope this is your golden ticket to a happy baby!!!

  • Zantac is a great medication for reflux. I work in the medical field and have had a LO with severe reflux. It is much easier to give than some of the other reflux meds and is the first choice of most pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists now. It also works faster than some of the other meds. I had to switch from Prevacid to Zantac and I think it worked much better (however my sons got worse because of his protein allergies and now he is on adult meds). I found that when I gave the prevacid it did not dissolve completely so I never felt like he got it all and it seemed to take hours to work. However, with the Zantac my LO seemed to feel better very soon after and calmed his down for the day. Until we got on Zantac he was not able to sleep (I am talking a few 20 minute naps is all even at night!). You sure don't want his little throat to get burned from the reflux, thats what happened to us and it took 12 or so weeks to heal. Getting your LO on Zantac now will help the pain from reflux, and prevent further damage. It is a good medication just make sure your doctor monitors the progress and see if a dosage increase is necessary when your LO gets bigger.
