Trying to Get Pregnant

Help! PCOS?

Hi ladies! I've had a pretty interesting evening, hope you don't mind if I vent and ask some questions!

My SIL delivered her baby tonight, so I'm REALLY excited that my niece is here and healthy! I actually referred my SIL to her Dr (she was my Dr during my pregnancy with my DD). I've been having some pretty irregular cycles and called to make an appointment to discuss them. I couldn't get in until the end of this month (I called last month) but she did some bloodwork. I believe she checked my LH, FSH and thyroid levels.

When my Dr. came in to deliver my niece she asked if anyone had contacted me regarding the results and when I said "no," she told me that she would talk to me later. As I was about to leave she pulled me aside and told me she believes I have PCOS. She wants me to start using OPK's and she warned me it might be hard to conceive but that it is possible.

I'm feeling a little confused/shocked about this. Can she tell I have this from just checking my LH and FSH levels? Also, since my cycles tend to be very irregular would OPK's be accurate? If you have PCOS, how did you find out you had it?

Ugghh. Sorry this is so long. Hopefully you made it through! I'm sure she'll answer these questions when I see her but I'm looking for some personal experiences! :) TIA

Re: Help! PCOS?

  • One of the methods of diagnosing PCOS is through b/w, so yes she could know along with your history if you have it based on that information. You'll want her to do an u/s to check for cysts though sometime too.

OPK's can be misleading for women with PCOS as our bodies (women with PCOS) can gear up to O several times but never actually O. Hence, the sometimes several false positives. Or you can never surge or gear up and therefore never O without interventions. Charting is your best tool as your temps don't lie unless on fertility meds and/or progesterone.

I was dx with PCOS after b/w, u/s and a year long history of no ovulation.

Thank you for responding! I really appreciate the info. I feel like this came out of no where. Thanks again!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17. I had really irregular periods (only 3-4 periods per year) but didnt think much of it because I was so young. I was diagnosed because I had a very large cyst rupture and was in a huge amount of pain. Well, I've had blood work regularly since then and it seems that my PCOS is going away! The doctor says it was probably because I was on the pill for years and it helped to regulate my periods. I also was on a low carb diet and it really helped my glucose levels fall into the lower risk of PCOS category. In the mean time, I would just watch your diet and use the OPK's to get pregnant. Good luck!

    Yes yes and yes!

While b/w does give you a clue to whether you may have PCOS, the only  conclusive way to know for sure is with an ultrasound.
Definitely chart. You'll learn pretty quickly what your TRUE signs for O are and if you are Oing at all. GL!

    All of this.

I was dx with PCOS with b/w, an u/s and a very long history of irregular cycles (2 to 3 periods a year), and no ovulation.
