Constipation causes pee accidents

There's a post further down that made me think of this, and I thought I'd share in case anyone else is in my position.

DD has always had problems wetting her panties. She's 4 1/2. We tried everything-sticker charts, speaking to her, diapers and pull ups. We were at our wits end. We took her to the dr and he said she's constipated. She had been pooping, but apparently not enough, or not easily enough. The poop inside puts pressure on other internal stuff and forces the urine out.

She's on miralax daily, but we're also fighting her fear of pain when she poops (so she holds it), and the embarrassment of wetting her panties (that would be mine and daycares fault). Things are getting better, and she is having more completely dry days.

Anyway, I just wanted to let people know so you don't have the same issues we've had/are having.

Re: Constipation causes pee accidents

  • How much miralax do you give her?  DD sometimes has this issue.  She sometimes gets constipated and has a few pee accidents daily.

  • The doc said half a cap, but that was too much. We do 1 1/2 teaspoons every morning with juice. It's about 1/3 capful. You can't make it in advance though, apparently it loses effectiveness-learned that the third dr visit.
  • My pediatrician was big on this.  My DD was constipated a lot as a baby, and the pedi told me when she was a baby, to make sure she never gets constipated, and that when it comes to potty training, the worst thing is constipation because of the fear of pain or pushing.  Also holding pee for a while doesn't cause damage, but I think he said holding #2 can cause issues.

Both my kids take pedialax fiber gummies every single day, also my younger takes benefiber.  I do not want to risk even a single day of constipation.  Plus with the gummies it seems like it can almost be timed, like if my DD has a big meal, a nice big drink, and a couple gummies, she's 'ready to go'.

    Good luck!

  • I wish my doc had said something about this before. I may need to check out those gummies, thanks!
  • There are diff varieties of fiber gummies, but both my kids love the pedialax.  My four year old gets up to 3 a day - but I also make sure she drinks lots of fluid too.

Also my 2 year old gets a lot of benefiber in addition to a fiber gummy.. not sure what it is but it is misery if she gets constipated!  It is nice to get into a routine.

I know a lot of kids have issues going #2 anywhere but home, so that's something else to think about.  I think my DD has gone #2 twice at a store, otherwise it has always been at home, and that is in 2+ years.  So the fiber gummies are great like I said, she has a big meal, a big drink, and 2 fiber gummies with lunch and sure enough she often runs to the bathroom.  Nice to kind of get into a routine.  GL!
