Fondant vs icing

What are you doing? I'm feeling a bit stingy after looking into fondant cake pricing. I can't bring myself to spend hundreds more just for pretty icing.(that tastes like sugar paste). Additionally I have to get TWO cakes because we are having two parties. So I'm going with regular icing. I've been seeing lots of siggy shots with fondant covered cakes, so I feel kinda bad.

Re: Fondant vs icing

  • I don't think we're doing fondant either. In fact, I think I'm just going to make cupcakes and have a small smash cake for B. Surprise

  • I actually met with a cake designer last week and she told me that she could create the same look as fondant using buttercream...

I loathe the taste of fondant!

  • We are not only doing icing, we are ordering at Walmart in true redneck style.

  • Fondant = nasty tasting!  I plan on having icing on Lil D's cake.
  • Fondant sucks balls. I have a friend making the twins' cakes and I asked her to do buttercream. This is a cake to be eaten not looked at.

  • I am making DD's cake.  It is a 3D bear, so just regular frosting appled with a tip (that I need to practice with!). The Big cake is a flat bear, I'll probably frost it the same way. Fondant tastes like booty. =-)

Walmart cake tastes better than many fancy expensive wedding cakes I have had.  We did a Sam's club cake for Gavin's second birthday party and it was delish!

  • Okay, so I feel good about frosing.

As far as ordering from a mass retailer. I had a delicious cake for my shower from Wegmans, so I'll be ordering LO's cake there too. It was marble with whipped cream filling and fresh strawberries. The only thing that sucks at wegmans is they got sued for copyright infringement last year, so they won't be able to replicate Peter Rabbit :( I'm going to draw another rabbit that looks like him...perhaps in a green coat instead of blue hahah.

  • I wanted fondant right away, but then realized buttercream is way better.  Now I just need to decide what flavors to choose for the inside!

  • Frosting for the smash cake!! I want to see it smeared all over DD's face haha.

I might do a fondant covered cake for the adults just because I have some cute decorating ideas.. I have worked a little with fondant so it will be a DIY.

And then baby "healthy" cupcakes, since there will be a lot of babies and moms from my fitness group there and they are pretty health-conscious.

  • Fondant is disgusting, and I don't think I've actually ever met anyone that liked the taste.  Buttercream frosting all the way!!

My husband loves the taste. I think he's crazy. I'm using buttercream for my daughter's cake.

  • I made DS's cake (cupcakes actually).  $15 for all the ingredients was way better than $100+ for a bakery cake.  Plus it was healthy and made from stuff he likes (apples and pumpkin).  I just did a whipped cream frosting.  I figured it would taste good and whipped cream makes good messes, so we got some good pictures out of it.

  • Buttercream!  I'm making it, so there won't be fancy layers, but it's the baby's first b-day.  You don't want to start all fancy now, there are many years of b-day cakes to have and if you start w/ wedding cakes, everyone will expect that every single year.  I'm skipping the whipped cream b/c it's good to work with, and we don't have the fridge room for a whipped cream-topped cake.
  • L's cake will have fondant, but my sister (who is starting a cake-pastry activity and is very talented) is making his cake

  • Fondant for the big cake because I'm making it and now I'm going to use regular frosting for the smash cake. I wasn't even thinking about it and would have surely put fondant on the smash cake and my poor child wouldn't have been able to smash it.

  • We used icing.  Fondant may look pretty but icing tastes much better imo.

Good call on going with buttercream, I think your guests will be much happier.

  • I'm not doing fondant. I'm doing butter cream frosting that my SIL is making. She did fondant on the birthday cake for her daughter's party (she made the hat from Cat in the Hat). The smash cake for my niece was with butter cream frosting though.

I agree!!  I can't stand the taste of fondant.  The girl who makes our cakes knows this so she always using buttercream frosting.  So yummy!!!

May I have a link (or small run-down) of the recipe?

Haha. We got our cake from another bakery and they messed up the flavor of the cake, they fvcked up the color of the icing, and they used only one color for the roses on it. My cousin picked up the cake so we didnt realize it til we saw it at the reception and the topper (Boyds resin of the boy and girl wedding with the bear pastor) didnt match the cake. I wish we had gone to Walmart, and then it would at least have tasted good.

  • I hate fondant and I hate buttercream. And in order to have fondant they have to put a layer of buttercream on the cake, so the whole concept is a lose-lose for me.

I think we're doing a Dairy Queen cake because they're awesome.

  • I made the cake myself so price wasn't a contributing factor, but I still decided to go with regular icing because it tastes so much better. Too bad it was so hot out that day... looks like my cake was melting. lol (see siggy)

  • I don't know what they did differently but the fondant on our wedding cake was delicious.  I'm ordering my DD's cake from Genuardis & got a Yo Gabba Gabba icing picture for the top of it.  Their cakes are good & they give a really nice 4" block style cake for the baby for free.

  • Most places don't know how to make real fondant anyway they just use that stuff out of a bucket.  I think I might make DS's cake and get the rest of us another dessert.  And whoever mentioned Dairy Queen cakes is so right.  They are awesome!
