What are you doing? I'm feeling a bit stingy after looking into fondant cake pricing. I can't bring myself to spend hundreds more just for pretty icing.(that tastes like sugar paste). Additionally I have to get TWO cakes because we are having two parties. So I'm going with regular icing. I've been seeing lots of siggy shots with fondant covered cakes, so I feel kinda bad.

Re: Fondant vs icing
my read shelf:
I actually met with a cake designer last week and she told me that she could create the same look as fondant using buttercream...
I loathe the taste of fondant!

Walmart cake tastes better than many fancy expensive wedding cakes I have had. We did a Sam's club cake for Gavin's second birthday party and it was delish!
This is so true!!! What do they do to that stuff?! It's really good.
Okay, so I feel good about frosing.
As far as ordering from a mass retailer. I had a delicious cake for my shower from Wegmans, so I'll be ordering LO's cake there too. It was marble with whipped cream filling and fresh strawberries. The only thing that sucks at wegmans is they got sued for copyright infringement last year, so they won't be able to replicate Peter Rabbit
I'm going to draw another rabbit that looks like him...perhaps in a green coat instead of blue hahah.
Frosting for the smash cake!! I want to see it smeared all over DD's face haha.
I might do a fondant covered cake for the adults just because I have some cute decorating ideas.. I have worked a little with fondant so it will be a DIY.
And then baby "healthy" cupcakes, since there will be a lot of babies and moms from my fitness group there and they are pretty health-conscious.
My husband loves the taste. I think he's crazy. I'm using buttercream for my daughter's cake.
Good call on going with buttercream, I think your guests will be much happier.
I agree!! I can't stand the taste of fondant. The girl who makes our cakes knows this so she always using buttercream frosting. So yummy!!!
May I have a link (or small run-down) of the recipe?

Haha. We got our cake from another bakery and they messed up the flavor of the cake, they fvcked up the color of the icing, and they used only one color for the roses on it. My cousin picked up the cake so we didnt realize it til we saw it at the reception and the topper (Boyds resin of the boy and girl wedding with the bear pastor) didnt match the cake. I wish we had gone to Walmart, and then it would at least have tasted good.

I hate fondant and I hate buttercream. And in order to have fondant they have to put a layer of buttercream on the cake, so the whole concept is a lose-lose for me.
I think we're doing a Dairy Queen cake because they're awesome.
