Progesterone is needed to support the early stages of a pregnancy. If your body doesn't produce enough on its own, they will give you supplements. They will be looking for a level of 15 or above for a medicated cycle (10 or above for a non-medicated cycle). If it is lower than that, they will probably supplement.
My progesterone levels were good but my RE put me on it anyway after my IUI. I was told, if I needed it it was there to help, if I didn't need it, it wouldn't do any harm.
I had the vaginal suppositories and it was sticky and gross but otherwise not really a big deal. I think, though, that it contibuted to major exhaustion during the 1st tri. The bright side is that I slept really, really, really well.
