Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When can a baby sit in the shopping cart?

When can a baby sit in a shopping cart?  When she can sit unsupported? When she can sit supported?  My daughter sits fine if she has something behind her and to her sides a little bit (like a high chair or stroller), but not on her own yet; I'm wondering if she can sit in a shopping cart with a cover on it, or if there's not enough support.

I hate taking up all that space in the cart with her carseat! :-P

  • When she can sit unsupported. How about wearing her while you shop?

  • I have been wondering the same thing. I have no idea!! I just wanted to say your LO is ADORABLE!!
  • I just started putting him in shopping carts about 2 weeks ago.  At that point, he could sit up a little unassisted but, with the cover on the cart, he has a little more cushion.  Just this past week he's started sitting up great unassisted.  He loves being in the cart and it makes shopping trips so much easier (I wore him prior but he's 20lb + and takes up the whole front of me, lol).  I say just give it a try and see how she does.  You may have to pull her up straight a few times but she'll most likely do ok.

  • We just started having her sit in the cart, she seems to better each time.  I think the first few times they don't know how to control their bodies when you turn the cart.  LO had a few falling over to the side.  Now she does great and she loves to look around.

  • My son could sit in them a short amount of time at roughly 6 months. IMO, those carts are so uncomfortable though that they really need great control, the ability to hang on and sit up without anything behind their back. I would say it wasn't until almost 7 months that we finally able to sit in it the entire shopping trip without tipping over and being comfortable. That is all without a cover.

  • My sister-n-law bought the below cover and absolutely loves it. Her DD rides in it comfortably and with ease at 5 months of age.

  • I started when my 2.5 year old was 5 months.  He was able to sit pretty well supported and even unsupported for a few minutes at a time.  I got a floppy cart cover and wedged my diaper bag next to him to kind of lean on.  He did fine.

  • I dont understand how less room is being taken up in the cart...carseat or not the whole front seat part is being used. Am I missing something?

It's safer to put the car seat in the basket, not on the front of the cart. In the basket, it leaves hardly any room for anything else.

  • We have yet to put our LO in the shopping cart. We do have a cover and I have a feeling we will be trying it very soon. She is able to sit up for longer now. One tip a friend told me is to use paper towels as a cushion on each side of your baby to help them not sway. Then if your not planing on buying the towels place them back on the shelve. ;) Good Luck!
