Can not Gain Weight

This is my first pregnancy, I am 31 weeks. At my last appointment my doctor told me I could not gain anymore weight, I was not surprised since I have put on 50 lbs so far.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? I have started watching my calorie intake and keeping it around 1,800-2,000 calories.

When I first saw my doctor she did not seem too concerned about weight gain, she gain 55 lbs during her pregnancy and therefore that was the most she would allow anyone to gain. Well being my first time, and not realizing how easily the weight would come on, I did not really monitor what was eating, and now I screwed up and have gained too much :(

  • I don't know, but I don't think you want to diet while pregnant. Not to mention sometimes weight gain in pregnancy is out of our control so I am surprised your doctor said that to you. I am not an expert but I would focus on exercise and staying active and eating healthy as much as possible rather than cutting calories. That said, don't start an exercise program now if you have not been exercising all along.

  • I agree, you may not need to "diet" but cut the fast food (if any) and the sugars too!  Just eat healthy.  Take nice long walks.  I gained 39 lbs my girl is 9 months now and I have lost 49 lbs.  ive just maintained my healthy pregnancy diet as well as plenty of exercise.  I feel great.
  • Thats crazy she said you "can't" gain any more weight!  That isn't 100% in your control with a growing baby and possible fluid retention. Focus on what you can control...exercise daily, eat healthy meals with fruit and veggies for snacks, and stick to water for liquids.  You can only do what you can do.

  • I guess every Dr is different. I gained 60lbs with my first and my Dr never said a word. I also worked out and ran up until I gave birth and ended up losing 40 within 4 weeks after the baby was born. I can only assume I carried a lot of water weight. I would not diet! The third trimester is most important for the growth of your baby. I would start by writing down everything you eat. It helped me this pregnancy.

If you stay around 2000 calories a day... You are in no way dieting. Rather you will be maintaining. I think that will keep you on track. Perhaps incorporate some light exercise. Walks, upper body weights, swimming, yoga...

  • The other posts are right- you can only do what you can do at this point. I would work to incorporate only healthy snacks & foods at this point. Don't torture yourself dieting. Pregnancy is hard enough in the third trimester without counting calories. Some women around this time start to loose weight, because their stomach is being squished by the baby. You might be one of those women, or you might gain more- but it also depends on your pre pregnancy weight. I wouldn't worry too much- just do your best and after the baby arrives worry about the rest. Everyone is different.
