i had a transvaginal ultrasound at 5 weeks and 5 days. We saw one heartbeat and we believe only one sac.
My HCG level for that week was 23,000.
I saw my doctor at my first prenatal appointment and she brought up the possiblity of twins based onthe HCG level. Perhaps, the other baby was hiding behind the first one during the ultrasound.
Has anyone had a "hidden twin?" and for those that had twins was your HCG level significantly high?
I will be having a followup ultrasound on oct 17th to confirm twins or not.
Re: HCG level and ultrasound question
You can't judge anything by HCG. I know two women who got pregnant and had significantly higher betas than me and both had singletons (one has already had her baby and the other is at 24 weeks now so they're SURE it's not multiples). My betas were high average for a singleton and low average for twins (based on betabase numbers). Absolute HCG numbers mean nothing. If your ultrasound showed one sac, it's very unlikely you have more than one baby. When I had my first ultrasound at 6w2d the tech saw two sacs immediately.
In any case, congratulations on your pregnancy!
thanks ladies!
i am very excited either way!
This. Well said.
Had a very early u/s at 5w1d. Clearly saw 2 sacs but no HBs yet. While I did have high betas with my multiples pg, there are some women whose fell in the normal range and have multiples and some who have singletons with high numbers, too.
GL with your u/s and congrats on your pg!!
