Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What a horrible weekend...

Poor DD has started showing signs of teething, and is absolutely miserable...which makes me and DH miserable because we've tried everything we can in an attempt to make her feel better and nothing works for longer than a few minutes. Between the constant flow of drool, the resulting diarrhea and upset tummy, runny nose, fist chewing (she refuses to take any of the teething toys we have...she either wants her fist or my fingers), issues with latching thanks to sore gums, and just general unhappiness...I just don't know what to do, and it makes me feel horrible. We've given her PediaCare, massaged her gums with a cool cloth, offered her a wide variety of teething toys, let her chew on my fingers, and nothing seems to help.

I EBF and I nurse on demand since I'm a SAHM, but she hasn't been off the boob since this whole mess started on Friday because she latches, sucks 2-4 times, pulls back, latches again, pulls back and cries, latches again, sucks a few more times, rinse and repeat. She's never had a problem latching and/or nursing since day one, but it's been a nightmare this weekend. And her sleep schedule? Ugh...She's normally asleep by 10:30pm and wakes up about 7am, but since this started, I'm lucky if I can get her in bed before midnight. Then she's wide awake at 4-5am and won't go back to sleep unless I'm holding her. I'm exhausted!

I thought 3 months was too early for teething symptoms? Is there anything I can do to help make her feel better at all?

  • It's slightly unusual but certainly not unheard of. Have you spoken to the pedi about giving her some baby acetaminophen? I've heard that can help with some of the pains of teething.

I spoke to him Friday evening when this started, and he told us to give her the PediaCare, which is acetaminophen. It seems to help her for a bit, but when it wears off? Whoa buddy, does she let you know! We can only give it to her every 4 hours with no more than 5 doses in a 24 hr period, but the pain relief doesn't seem to last that long for her. I'm going to give him a call tomorrow morning to see what else he recommends.

  • DS started teething 3 weeks ago, at 2 months. It's bad for like two days, and then he'll be fine for two days and has just been like that. He is the opposite with nursing though, he wants to nurse constantly, because he chomps down on my nipples. He's usually asleep between 8 and 9, and tonight, it's midnight and he's still awake and I want to pull my hair out so I'm right there with you :)
  • Well I'm a dope, I hadn't heard of PediaCare lol. I know you mentioned that she doesn't like anything but her fist or your hand but have you tried whole refrigerated pickles by any chance? I love these because they're way too big to choke on but the firmness and coldness of them help a LO in the gnawing and numbing process needed for teething.

Ugh, poor LO! I'm so happy they can't remember this as they get older because this is just one of the worst times for them. I'd rather be dealing with a growth spurt than this, that's for sure!

I just got DD back to sleep in her crib for the second time, but I'm just waiting to see if she'll wake up again before I chance hitting the sack. Keeping my fingers crossed that she'll stay asleep for a few hours.

    Good luck with your LO!

LOL! No worries. I didn't know about it until our pedi recommended using it when DD went in for her 2 month vaccinations.

And I didn't even think of using pickles! I'll have to run to the store tomorrow to pick some up. Is there a particular kind that I should get?

  • Oh I just grab whatever is cheapest or on sale lol. I'm sure I should probably be checking for sodium content and whatnot but they're not really eating them right?? lol

Very true! I'll definitely get some tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed that they work. Thanks!

I just got him asleep finally! Hooray! Of course I'm wide awake now :) lol

That's what I keep trying to tell myself, he won't remember it, we've all had to go through teething as babies and it won't kill him! I'd rather deal with a growth spurt for sure. At least they're not constantly upset during that time, you're just in higher demand for a few days. The first tooth coming in can take a long time though! I haven't called his dr yet, tonight is the first night he's been this bad, but thank God DH will be home in two hours and then LO can be his problem! lol

  • Are you sure she doesn't have an ear infection?  The eating thing and crappy sleeping is also a sign of an EI.

The biting of hands is a development of this age as well, not necessarily a teething sign.  3 months is horribly early to teeth.

Took her to the pedi this morning, and her ears checked out. He confirmed that she was beginning to teeth when he checked her gums and said that he could feel the ridges of the teeth below the gum surface. He told me that she could teeth off and on like this up until she's 5-6 months before they ever breech the gums. Poor thing. Sad
