Crawling

My twins are 9 1/2 months old.  DS has been crawling and cruising furniture for about a month now.  My DD hates being on her tummy...so she's not crawling yet.  Is this normal? Any tips for encouraging her to crawl??

They were born at 34 1/2 weeks.

TIA!

Re: Crawling

  • At 9 months one of my boys did not crawl at all.  The pedi was not at all concerned.  He is now low crawling (army crawling).  It's a little frustrating to see him lagging behind his brothers but every baby is different.

We tried to encourage crawling by getting on our tummies with him, putting toys just out of reach and making him stretch to get them, etc.  I don't know if any of that actually helped.  I think he just does things in his own time.

  • Thanks for your reply! I'll continue to get on my tummy with her.  :-)

  • My girls started crawling at 8.5 months and it just sorta happened.  My nephew did not crawl until 11 months (he was born at 39 weeks) and his pedi was never concerned.  He also did not walk until 15 months, but now is doing fine so he was just a little slower to get moving.
  • I think what you're going through is normal. DD was late to sit unassisted and learned to crawl and sit up the same day around 8 months. DS, who is much bigger than DD so he has a lot more to lift, didn't crawl until 10 months. The pedi wasn't worried at all.

The thing that got them crawling was when they got on their tummy and they were struggling, we put their pacifier out in front of them. They love their paci and they don't really get them during the day, so it was a treat for them to see them and try to crawl and reach for them.

  • One of my guys just hated to be on his tummy. We just did minimal tummy time and played with him on our chests. He's coming along now, but his brother army crawls and he doesn't really. We just keep using toys to encourage his moving.
