With my 1st c-section (induced, 12hrs labor, 3hrs pushing, emergency c/s) I had staples and they were taken out 3 days after the surgery. My wound opened up after 2 days of me being home and it got infected. My scar looks like HELL, raised, red and bumpy (keloid, although i've had other surgeries that healed perfect) and I really choke it up to the staples. I'm wondering if mine were taken out too fast?
I switched OB's this time around...but I was just curious, if you had staples, how soon after the surgery were they removed?
Re: When did they take your staples out?
They took mine out the day I was disharged or the day before. I forget. But it was probably 2-3 days PP.
I had mine taken out 7 days later.
My incision looks great, but the scars where the staples were are red and raised.
7-10 days later, I forget. I remember thinking THAT was too soon, but my friend, an L+D nurse, thought that was very late. In her hospital, they usually remove them before you leave the hospital.
My scar is tiny and barely noticeable.
My experience sounds very similar. Less than 24 hours after surgery the on-call OB (I labored w/ a midwife) tried to take my staples out and I said hell no. She insisted it was fine. The next day another OB came by, and insisted I was being a baby. I let him take the staples out. I ended up with a major infection that required that they re-open the incision (they ignored the infection at first, even though it looked bad to me... green + yellow ooze and pus) and I had to have a nurse come to my home daily to treat it by packing the incision with gauze until it healed. The scar is big, red, and bumpy as well. I think that they staples were taken out too soon. The whole experience is one of the reasons that I hope to VBAC in the future.
