C-sections

When did they take your staples out?

With my 1st c-section (induced, 12hrs labor, 3hrs pushing, emergency c/s) I had staples and they were taken out 3 days after the surgery.  My wound opened up after 2 days of me being home and it got infected.  My scar looks like HELL, raised, red and bumpy (keloid, although i've had other surgeries that healed perfect) and I really choke it up to the staples.  I'm wondering if mine were taken out too fast?

I switched OB's this time around...but I was just curious, if you had staples, how soon after the surgery were they removed?

  • C/S 1 3 days after and C/S 2 a week after. I think my scar from #1 looked better.

  • I have had 2 and with both they came out before I left the hospital. The first one was day 4 and the second was day 3. It creeped me out because I thought it was too soon but I guess not. They put steri-stips on after the staples came out. They said I would feel better after they came off but I thought it felt worse.

  • My were in for 14 day's.. Once the skin around staples started to itch they would be ready to come out. My scar healed up really good. Looks like a fine pencil line....

  • They took mine out the day I was disharged or the day before.  I forget.  But it was probably 2-3 days PP.

  • Born on the 23rd, removed on the 26th before I went home, and then I had steri strips. Healed beautifully.

  • I had my staples out day 3 also. No problems. Actually they were able to clean up my scar a little bit. I had previous surgery on my kidneys so for the c/s they used the same incision line. I did have to keep those surgical tape things on for 2 weeks. That def helped.

  • on the 4th day before i left the hospital, my scar is wider than the norm but it healed well.

  • I was discharged on day 5 due to issues with LO and they took them out that day. If LO had been good to go I would have been discharged on day 3 and they would have taken them out then (every time I saw the doctor/midwife they told me to make sure they were taken out before I went home).

  • I had mine taken out 7 days later.

My incision looks great, but the scars where the staples were are red and raised.

  • I had mine out on day 3 both times and my first incision healed to the point you could just barely see it.  This time around I'm only two months out, but it already looks awesome.

  • I had the same OB with both of my girls and he took them out on day 3 and I was discharged on day 4.  Steri strips were all I had on my incision going home and those fell off about 10 days after the surgery.  Now I have a new OB and I have no idea what to expect... I guess I should ask.  :)

  • I got mine out when I was discharged on day 4.  I didn't have any problems with them at all and the scar healed just fine.  It looks great!

  • Mine were removed both times 4 days postpartum, right before I was discharged from the hospital. Never had any problems.
  • Mine came out Day 3 and I left the hospital Day 5...

  • 7-10 days later, I forget. I remember thinking THAT was too soon, but my friend, an L+D nurse, thought that was very late. In her hospital, they usually remove them before you leave the hospital.

My scar is tiny and barely  noticeable.

  • C-section was Tuesday night. Staples came out on Monday. Scar is great, I guess:)

  • I had my c-section on a Sunday and the staples were removed the following week on Monday and then my OB put on steri strips which stayed on for about 2 weeks until they fell off.

My experience sounds very similar.  Less than 24 hours after surgery the on-call OB (I labored w/ a midwife) tried to take my staples out and I said hell no.  She insisted it was fine.  The next day another OB came by, and insisted I was being a baby.  I let him take the staples out.  I ended up with a major infection that required that they re-open the incision (they ignored the infection at first, even though it looked bad to me... green + yellow ooze and pus) and I had to have a nurse come to my home daily to treat it by packing the incision with gauze until it healed.  The scar is big, red, and bumpy as well.  I think that they staples were taken out too soon.  The whole experience is one of the reasons that I hope to VBAC in the future.

  • They took mine out before I was discharged from the hospital, so I guess that would be 3 days. My scar looks great. I really think it depends on the person, and maybe the surgeon. Some people heal faster than others.

  • One week.  And it is beautiful.  'Course, I have a belly, so there's lot of pudge to fill the lines.

  • 4 days PP then steri strips...i dont think i would have been able to have them in any longer they were causing me more pain than anything else.

  • 3 days, right before I was released from the hospital.  I then wore steri-strips (tape) for 2 weeks afterwards.

  • 4 days postop.  I was a mother-baby nurse and staple removal 3 days postop is pretty standard, unless you are a larger woman.  In that case the OB usually wanted the staples to stay in longer.  I doubt that caused your incision healing issues.
  • I think my doctor said 7 - 10 days after my c/s

  • They took my staples out the day they discharged me from the hospital (4 days) and replaced them with steri-strips which lasted a couple more days.
  • At 4 days pp on the day that I was released and then steri-strips were put across my incision. I had no issues with healing.

  • Mine dissolved and it was amazing. My doctor said it helps reduce the amount of scar tissue. You can't even see my scar now.

  • Mine came out three days after my c-section before I was discharged and had steri-strips placed (left those on until my 6 wk PP checkup). I thought I would have them much longer, but I my OB thoroughly looked me over before he made the call. I didn't dare touch the steri-strips. My OB took those off, too.

  • The day I was discharged which was day 5. The lady said it wouldn't hurt. She lied. Haha. It hurt so bad. I felt better with the staples in.
