Are there other things a doctor can do to get your labor going besides giving you pitocin?
I want to know what all my options/possibilities are. I know that my OB is going to offer to induce me at my 39 week appointment - she said they will offer it, and if it's not medically necessary, I can decline. I don't want pitocin again. Is there something else she can do, or is pitocin it?
Re: Alternatives to pitocin induction?
my SIL had a very successful induction with cervadil. It's a medicine that they put directly on your cervix (i've heard it's something like a tampon - so they can pull it at anytime if it's too much) to soften in and get your labor going. they can administer it several times to get it going. they did it maybe 3 times to her, spread out over a few hours. She ended up going into labor without needing any pitocin or anything!
(if it matters - she was induced early for high BP and showed no signs of being "ready" before induction)
Your doctor will probably only offer you pitocin.
A midwife or doula would have MANY more tricks up their sleeves.
I'm definitely not into nipple stimulation - I've read that there has to be A LOT of stimulation, and I think I'm all set with that. I'll talk to the OB and see what she says about it.
