Cloth Diapering

Rash from elastic

DD wears a SBish snapless overnight, with 3 doublers. We can't use wool, but we do use a thirsties cover and don't get any leaks. This morning she has an angry red mark on one thigh where the elastic would have been from the cover. Is this an "ammonia burn"? What can I do to avoid it?

Re: Rash from elastic

  • It's not likely ammonia burn because if it were it would be everywhere, not just where the elastic was.  You can try and really rinse the covers, use them only once, and see if that cuts down on irritation.  If you can't use wool you can try fleece overnight covers.  And in the end if it doesn't seem to bother her I wouldn't worry about it.  At times the elastic does irritate the skin but as long as it isn't something DD isn't complaining about or is in pain about I don't worry about and just make sure and use a different diaper for the day.  Some naked time may help as well or I really like the Cali Baby calendula cream.  HTH.

Thanks gypsy! I didn't know that. I'm definitely going to look into fleece.

The mark doesn't seem to bother her at all, so I'm not going to worry about it. And I had put the CaBaby Calendula on it before i even posted. I love that stuff! Between that and BUTTer, they totally healed her skin after her cast came off.

No problem.  I realized that was a horrible post grammatically -- so I'm glad you got what I meant :)  Definitely try fleece, I don't know who makes them anymore since we're pretty much done but I know it's out there.
