Trying to Get Pregnant

False Negative Pregnancy Test

  • If you've taken two tests and they've both been negative, then you're not pregnant.

  • It's likely not false, unless you are testing too early.  Do you know how many DPO you are?  Women often get false negatives until they are 18 DPO.  Have you gone to the doctor to get a blood test?  Those are usually more accurate.  I don't want to get your hopes up though.

Well, actually, pregnancy tests are not accurate until you are 18 DPO.  Some women will get false negatives if they test too early.  It explains this very clearly in TCOYF and FF, if you are confused by my meaning.   Maybe you see no reason to go in for a blood test until 60 days, but if she thinks she's having false negatives then why not just test?  I've heard women say they did not show up positive until they had a blood test.  She says she's convinced she's pregnant.  While I think it's unlikely, a blood test will tell her beyond a doubt.

Well, actually. no pregnancy tests are accurate before 18 DPO.  Especially if you know when you ovulated.  If they aren't accurate, why would women get + HPTs at 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 DPO?

So if I'm convinced of something that means it is true?  Well sh*t, then I'm convinced I'm pregnant and that I'm a millionaire!

Mine told me I was pregnant at 13dpo, and it was right. So I think that counts as accuracy. Did you mean that they're not 100% accurate? IMO, getting a blood test before you're even late is a waste of money and your doctor's time. If you've totally missed your period and you still are getting negative HPTs, then it might be time to head in for a blood draw. Phantom symptoms are an awful lot like pregnancy symptoms, so the fact that she's convinced she's pregnant could mean absolutely nothing at all.

Have you ever seen a pregnancy test commercial? I don't know anyone who is 18DPO FIVE days before their missed period.

Also read this and it will explain in some scenarios why a blood test is a waste of time and money. She will more than likely get a +HPT before a blood test would come back +.

I think you're misunderstanding me.  Some women can test before 18DPO and get a positive, but some women can't get a positive reading until 18 DPO.  This is a fact, if you still doubt me, look it up.  And also, I said it's unlikely that she is pregnant, but if she is convinced her tests are false, and if she can't wait then she can get a blood test.  Not sure why this is so difficult to understand.  I didn't say tests are always false until 18 DPO.   And I certainly did not say that if she is convinced that she is pregnant than she must be pregnant.  She's asking if it is possible.  And though it is rather unlikely, yes, it is possible only if she is testing too early.

You very clearly said that HPTs are not accurate until 18 DPO...which is not true.  I think you are taking an "extreme" and making it come off as the a typical scenario.  Yes, some women don't get a + until late (16-18 DPO), but on the whole that is not the norm and doesn't change the fact that HPTs are accurate well before 18 DPO

You're right, I was not clear.  I did mean that they are not 100% accurate until 18DPO.  I definitely did not mean that they aren't accurate at all until 18 DPO.  I apologize if my meaning was misunderstood.  I was not trying to give the impression that it was likely that she is having false negatives.  But she asked if it was possible, and I said, yes if she is testing too early then it is possible.  For my insurance, pregnancy tests are free.  I am not suggesting she waste her money on a doctor's visit.  But if she has insurance, then it might give her peace of mind if she's already missed her period.

But even that is not accurate. They CAN be 100% accurate much earlier.

And you did suggest she waste money on an office visit. How the hell else do you think she's going to get a blood test done? I know I can't just call my doctor and demand a blood draw without being seen. And like kdg said, most doctors aren't going to order a blood test until 60 days.

And not to turn it into one of THOSE posts but a test at doctors office is not free. You personally may not be paying for it but insurance is, and that's part of what makes rates go up. If you are not paying OOP because your insurance covers it 100% that's even more of a reason to wait. I don't want to pay for someones impatience.

True, valid point. Even if she doesn't pay for an office visit, she may have to pay OOP for the draw, as well, depending on coverage. And yes, nothing is free. Someone's paying for that unnecessary blood draw

I also wanted to point out that you keep using the term "false negative". If it's too early to test, it's not a false negative. It's just negative. Yes, she may be in the process of becoming pregnant and yes, the hcg may increase enough to show on a test with a few days, but if you are testing early and the test is negative..it's not false. It's just negative. Understand?

also, while going and getting a blood test may be convenient, if you are not at cd60 or more it's a waste of time. Regardless of how pregnant you may feel. Even if it doesn't cost anything OOP to you, the test is being paid for. And if a nurse is doing Yhe paperwork instead of the dr, you're wastig her time. She could still be helping others instead of doing your unnecessary paperwork. Not to mention the phlebotomist and all the people waiting in the waiting room for other things.

I would just request a blood test.  I just had one done a few months ago, it in no way wasted my ob's time, the nurse did all the paper work.  And it only cost like $6.00, cheaper than a store hpt.

Sigh.  You know it cost more than $6.00 right?  Just because it only cost YOU $6.00 doesn't mean it only cost $6.00

The allowed amount was $6.00,  it went to my deductible, so that makes it cost $6.00

THIS and it may not have wasted your OB/GYN's time....but how about the nurse who had to deal with everything?

Also, it was her idea. I had 2 positive then 2 negative tests in one weekend.  So I am pretty sure that was a medically necessary test.

So you really think the cost to the doctor, phlebotomist and lab was only $6? So if you and insurance didn't pay what it cost to perform the test then the doctors office had to eat the cost which gets absorbed into other things people pay for. When you could have just been patient and waited to test again with an HPT which you can get for less than $6. Edited because I just saw your other post. Having positive tests followed by negative tests is a reason for the blood draw. Not getting a positive HPT before CD60 is not the same thing.

::blinks::  You still don't get it do you?

A bloodtest doesn't "just cost $6"...no matter what you need it for.  Also, as stated in refernece to the OP and not your situation there is NO NEED to go get a bloodtest just because you are a "little late".  There is a reason it is suggested you wait until CD 60.

and yes, I think it only costs $6.00.  I work for a dr.'s office, I know how much thinks are written up.

She's hopeless on so many things. Like how you can feel pregnancy symptoms right after O, she never did explain that one.
