My DS has had frequent nosebleeds for quite some time. This past winter we installed a humidifier system to our heater to help prevent the nosebleeds. He also sleeps with a humidifier in his room. But this hasn't helped. And even now, when the humidity is high, he still gets nosebleeds about once a week. He isn't picking his nose or anything, they just start bleeding randomly. Anyone else have a LO with this? His 4 year doctor well-visit is coming up and I plan to ask the doctor then, but wondered if anyone here had any experience with this. TIA!
Re: Frequent Nosebleeds?
They make saline sprays and even a saline gel and both should help if it's a moisture issue.
My DH has gotten random BAD (tons of blood) nose bleeds pretty much all his life but only once or twice a year.
When Dylan gets them they're also really bad. Tons of blood. Covers the bed.
I'm pretty sure it's not picking related because they usually wake him up and it's all over his face like he's rolled in it. He's a sound sleeper so I know he's not randomly waking up at 2 am and choosing to pick his nose, KWIM? If it was picking they'd happen right after he goes to bed or just upon waking, not in the middle of the night.
Ironically Jace is my nose picker and has never had one.
The thing that would bother me is the frequent part. And the humidifier not helping any more.
I doubt it's anything serious but having dealt with it I know it's a huge PITA as far as how much they can bleed and how much can be destroyed with the blood - especially if it's in bed. It took me a couple of nose bleeds before I bought those allergy pillow covers so the pillow doesn't get soaked thru.
Our last bleed a few weeks ago ended up destroying his comforter. I stripped the bed and thought I found all of it. I didn't even think that he might have been on top of the comforter because it was all over his bottom sheets and soaked thru to the mattress cover (and mattress in one spot). When I went to make the bed later that day after washing the sheets his comforter was COVERED in blood and by that point it had sat untreated for more than 6 hours. Most of it came out but there's still a feint stain there.
BTW - try the spray oxy clean laundry stain stuff if you're struggling to get the blood out of stuff. It works AWESOME if you get it on there quickly.
Let me know what your doc says.
I just figured it's a part of life for us since DH has a long glorious history with them and we live in a super dry climate.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
My brother had bad nose-bleeds to the point of being hospitilized. They found out he had a Vitamin-K deficiency. Now we are noticing Callum is getting similar bleeds (last night for example the baby-sitters called us b/c he bonked his nose and wouldn't stop bleeding after 10 minutes and so they were freaking out).
So far we just put comfrey ointment in there once the bleeding has subsided and we give him a children's multi-vitamin with K in it (which has helped the intensity of the bleeds but they have not gone away). I would like to talk with his pedi for his 2 yr appointment and see if she might want us to do more (my brother takes a specific Vitamin K supplement that keeps the bleeding in line).
If things like humidifiers and making sure he isn't secretly digging for gold this might be a good avenue to look into it. I don't how common it is.
