Thrush - vent and advice...

My poor baby K has a horrible yeast rash and a bad case of thrush (me too - ouch!) Went to the pediatrician today and she prescribed nyastin for K's thrush and lotrimin for me. I mentioned that I'm still nursing T and asked whether I should treat him as well, and instead of telling me, she gives me a lecture on why I shouldn't be nursing him anymore. Grrrr. So, does anybody know whether I should treat my toddler as well? If so, how? I don't see any signs of thrush in his mouth, but I don't want to continue to pass it between us.... On a side note, does anybody have any recommendations for a pediatrician that is more supportive of extended nursing at the San Jose Kaiser facility? (This isn't the first time our pediatrician has made me less than pleased...) Thanks!

  • Wow, that's really a shame your ped isn't supporting your tandem nursing.  You can put a thin coat of raw coconut oil (cold pressed, eg. Nutiva brand -- the Spectrum brand is expellier pressed and no longer considered raw) on your toddlers cheeks, gums and tongue (or smear some on a sandwich).  Gentian Violet works well, but if he's not showing signs of colonization, then there's not much reason to go that far.  The coconut oil works on you too, if you don't want to use lotrimin.

  • Thanks :-) Do you know if the coconut oil work on K's yeast rash also (it's really bad)?

  • Who are you with now? We looove Dr. Jodi Richardson there and she was really supportive of BFing. Her daughter and mine are the same age and she pumped at work for a long time to keep her kiddo on BM. We are changing insurance and I'm SO SAD to leave her. :(

  • I'm so sorry your pedi is not supportive, and kuddos for you for your decision to sill bf.

We are currently dealing with a case of thrush as well. From what I've read it says to treat mom and infant/child/toddler even if one is not exhibiting signs.

BTW...I feel your pain, literally. Thrush totally stinks.

  • I used to give my DS yogurt with a scoop of acidophilus powder ( a probiotic).  You can find it at GNC.  I also used to put a little of the powder on my nipple before I nursed.  Worked great and cleared up the infection quickly and kept us from passing it back and forth.

  • Thanks for all the advice :-) Apparently Richardson isn't taking new patients, but we put a call into her anyways... In the meantime, coconut oil and probiotics it is! Here's hoping for  quick recovery...

  • Noah and I were stuck passing thrush back and forth for three or four weeks a couple months ago.  Nystatin didn't work for us, and eventually we had to use the Gentian Violet (which was hard to find, but Target pharmacy ordered it for us, came in one day).  I told people Noah was going through a goth phase when they asked about his stained dark purple lips.

And I ate a lot of yogurt.

    Feel better!

  • yes, it will work on yeasty bum rashes also
