Need Opinions on Feeding

So my DS had his 6 month appt today....I talked about my son's feeding schedule with my ped and she seems to think he needs to be eating more solids and having less breastmilk.  He is exclusively fed BM and fed both lunch and dinner.  For lunch I will give him either a fruit or a veggie and dinner he has cereal and a fruit.  He eats a lot of milk during the day...i would say between 6 to 7 feedings and 6 to 7 oz a feeding.  He is 20 ibs now. She thinks he should be eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and less milk since he is drinking over 40 oz. a day.  He has recently added a feeding or two not subtracted.  Wanted some thoughts on this since I was always under the understanding that breastmilk and formula is more nutritious/better than solids.  Thanks :)

Re: Need Opinions on Feeding

  • I think you're right and I completely disagree with your Pedi.  Up until the age of one BM/formula should be their main source of nutrition.  He will likely start decreasing the number of times he has BM during the day once you get closer to a year and are doing more of a breakfast/lunch/dinner thing and he's taking more table foods...but they'll usually take a larger amount at each feeding to compensate for the decrease in the amount of times he's nursing or getting a bottle.

  • I agree with you.  Your LO is only 6 months old, formula/BM should definitely be the primary source of nutrition.  Plus, you are already feeding solids.  Personally, I don't think the answer is more solids.  I think this might be one of those times where you use the pedi for advice and as a sounding board, but make your own decisions based on your research.

  • I agree that formula/bm should be the primary source of nutrition, but your LO seems to be drinking a lot on top of solids.

DD is eating cereal and fruit for lunch and fruit and veggie for supper. If I have some extra bm in the fridge, I'll give her some to drink for lunch, and some water to wash down supper. She bf's 4-5 other times a day (more often 4 than 5).

Edit: I couldn't remember if you said it was bm or formula when I was writing my reply. If DD takes a bottle, it is usually at bedtime and usually 6 oz. which is a lot since I want her to be full through the night. So, assuming she has 6 oz 4-5x  a day, that is 24-30 oz. a day. And you said yours got 40 oz. That is a lot I would think. I wouldn't think you had to replace bm with food, but maybe just offer a little less bm? I mean, I would think that's what your pedi is getting at?

  • Thank you all! My pedis viewpoints arent really in alignment with mine so I may start seeing a different one at the practice.  I really do  not want him to wean early off BM (would like to be able to nurse for a year if possible) and I think if I start to really replace then it may jeopardize my supply.  I think maybe the answer is to offer a bit less milk in the hopes that he eats more at lunch and dinner so hes taking in around 30 oz (not 40 of milk).  This should be a happy balance and allow him to still get most of his nutrition from the milk.  Everything is trial and error...I wish there was a universal rulebook for feeding!! Thanks!
