Re: dropping the swaddle

I know it seems scary and I know you don't think your LO is capable of sleeping without it.

I'm here to tell you that in hindsight, with both kids, breaking the swaddle was not.that.bad.

With all of our LO's starting to roll (and the immediate need to drop the swaddle ASAP) I thought I'd throw this out there :)

Also, go cold turkey! This one-arm-out business will only delay the adjustment period, which in both cases was about a week for my kiddos.

P.S. It's going to suck for a bit, and you are going to be up all night...but it will be worth it.  It's so nice not having to mess with the swaddle at night :)

  • Exactly what I needed to hear (well, the part that it'll be ok, not that we need to deswaddle immediately...lol that part sucks but I know it's true). DS is right in the middle of a growth spurt. I hope he takes a bit longer to roll, b/c he's already "off", I'd hate to have to put deswaddling in the mix right now too.

    Oy.

I actually de-swaddled her a few weeks ago, in anticipation of the rolling.  I was glad I did :)

    GL! You can do it!

  • I dread deswaddling Tongue Tied LO is still not rolling over so I'm not in a hurry for him to learn how to. We don't swaddle for naps, and he only sleeps 30 min at a time, is that what's going to be like at night?! Indifferent
  • I stopped swaddling and THEN she started to roll, that same night.  To let y'all know...night #1 was not bad at all!!  Nothing like those early newborn days. ;)  And I am used to her STTN.
  • Am I the only one who doesn't swaddle? Maybe that's why my boys have never learned to STTN to begin with...

We swaddled for maybe the first month, but they kept breaking free so we stopped.

We dropped the full swaddle after  a couple weeks. We still sometimes tie his arms down for the first sleep of the night, but he often breaks out. He goes to sleep no problem... I just wish he's stay asleep longer.

  • So I know you guys are in the CIO thread too, if I'm planning on starting trying to put LO down drowsy, but awake, should I try doing unswaddle and that together? Or get rid of swaddle first? LO isn't quite 4 months.

I personally would just drop the swaddle and put him down drowsy all at once.  Once he starts putting himself to sleep, you will have to go through it again when you drop the swaddle.  Easiest to do all at once.

LO is sleeping much longer for her naps unswaddled.  YAY!!  She would wake up fighting it, now she wakes up, kind of kicks around and falls back asleep.

  • M has not STTN since her 3 month growth spurt so I'm just using this non-sleep time to try and drop swaddle.

I only swaddled for maybe 2 weeks because she hated it and would break free.  She has been sleeping through the night since about 9 weeks and is not yet rolling from back to tummy.
