Diarrhea due to Nutramigen

Holy wow.  Does it ever stop?  Does it decrease in amount?  Never seen so much in a baby's diaper!!

Re: Diarrhea due to Nutramigen

  • Did you switch due to a milk protein allergy? When we switched ds#2 to Nutramigen for his allergy he continued to have awful bowel movements. Turns out his allergy is pretty severe and we had to switch to a prescription formula.

Yes, a suspected allergy. She was on Enfamil AR for reflux but it made her horribly constipated. She had blood in her stool, which her doc is unsure if it is due to a fissure or a milk allergy so she thought we should try Nutramigen. Now there's no more constipation, just horrible diarrhea!

I would talk to the doc about Nutramigen AA (that's the formula ds#2 is on) - it made a world of difference.

  • My son had diarrhea on Nutramigen as well.  He also had a severe milk allergy and we went on Neocate which is an amino acide formula you have to get on the internet.  Nutramigen AA is also an amino acid formula.  If it has been more than 2 weeks on Nutramigen and the diarrhea is not getting better please talk to your pediatrican about the amino acid based formulas!  It took us 2 1/2 months to get the correct formula but what a difference once you do!!  Good luck!!
  • Thanks for the info! Do these other formulas you both have mentioned NOT cause diarrhea?

Knock on wood - we've had normal bowel movements with ds#2 since he's been on it.

  • My son still has liquid stools but not diarrhea.  It has some form to it.  The GI specialist said this is normal.
  • DD had the same reaction to the Nutramigen. She also has milk protein intolerance (bloody diapers, eczema outbreaks, and insane gas mostly).  We switched her to Gerber Good Start Gentle, and she's done wonderful on it.  Aside from her tolerating it very well, I like it because it doesn't cost half as much as the Nutramigen/Alimentum formulas, and it's primary ingrediant is the predigested whey, not corn syrup like the others. It's also supposed to taste and smell much better than the Nut/Ali/Neo/Ele options.  Unless you go with an amino based formula (prescription Neocate or Elecare), all formulas are milk based - it just depends on how it's broken down (predigested) for baby.  Give the Good Start 3-5 days trial before going prescription.

  • It took 2 full weeks for the diarrhea to stop when we started DD on Nutramigen for milk/soy intolerance. She also has severe reflux. We thicken her feeds with Beechnut cereal (does not contain soy). Sometimes her poop is still runny, but the dr said this is normal.

Same as this poster. We had awful diarrhea on Nutramigen and it smells awful!! Great results with the Gerber Good Start.
