Side lying position

Is there any cons to the side lying position when bfing besides the possibility of falling asleep? I've just started trying this position in the evening when I'm trying to relax but not go to sleep yet and ds seems to do pretty good with it. Its also most comfortable for when he eats on the rt side which he usually clamps down on in any other position.

Re: Side lying position

  • I haven't heard anyone else say this, but for us, DS always threw up afterward.  We didn't do it often because I never could figure out how to do it comfortable, but when we did do it it would be a time when he was nursing to sleep.  After he woke up, he'd inevitably throw up shortly after. I guess being horizontal and not getting to burp just wasn't good for him.

  • This is the way I almost always nursed DS1 once he was a couple of months old. I kept a quilt & pillow on the floor of his room so I could just lay down to nurse him rather than sitting in the chair. I did pick him up & try to burp him before putting him back in his own bed though. Right now it's easier for me to nurse DS2 sitting up, but I do occasionally nurse him on my side. I think when he gets a little bigger & we're better at nursing laying down will be my primary position. For me time seemed to go faster laying down...maybe b/c I could relax & close my eyes instead of sitting there staring at him & clock watching.

  • I love sidelying nursing! I always fall asleep. It's not a con for me at all :) I nurse DD to sleep for bed sidelying and in the chair before naps

  • I am starting to like the side lying position with LO.  I never got the hang of it with DS#1.  I only do it during the night and LO tends to fall asleep right after.  To that end, he tends to only nurse on one side and that can leave my other side a little full.  I know that I should be happy for the extra sleep but I worry about it affecting my supply.  For example, last night he only woke at 1:45 to nurse - nursed on one side and that was it.  He didn't wake up again until 6 and I nursed him on both sides.  I was still feeling full when he was done so now I am pumping.
