Abnormal EEG and Normal EEG, now what?

We had a sedated EEG done for staring episodes a few months back, it was abnormal. A couple of weeks ago we had a 24hr EEG. I was told today that it was normal (I'm waiting for a call back from the neuro).

Now what?  Do we monitor him and test again in a year? do we just wait and see?

Good news is that his MRI was normal.

  • Carson had a different type of seizure, but after a normal EEG (the 8th), we are pretty much in "follow up" mode now.  We don't see our neuro again until he is 2, for another MRI.

  • Well, maybe your neuro will want to do some other tests, but I would guess you would just hope for the best, until you see evidence otherwise. If he has not been having any more spells, it might be something that he is growing out of. It will just be something you will always want to watch for.

It is frustrating how mysterious seizures are. :( But it is pretty cool that some people get to outgrow them. I just wish we all knew who was going to-- it would save stress!

    GL! :)

  • The neuro may suggest other tests, but you could be in wait & see territory as well.  As pp said seizures are somewhat mysterious still to the doctors (as is the brain in general). Hopefully he is outgrowing them.  Best of luck!

  • A normal EEG doesn't mean they can't still have seizures.  Maura's EEGs in the NICU, 3 of them, were all abnormal.  She's now 4 months old and we recently had an appointment with neurology at CHOP again.  They did a followup EEG.  It was normal.  This was on a Wednesday, when the Monday before, she had a seizure, and then had 5 days of breakthrough seizures that started that following Friday.  We were told at that appointment that a normal EEG doesn't mean that your child won't have seizures.

Personally, it's a good sign if they are now normal and were once abnormal...I think it signifies a change in the brain, a positive one!  While we went through those breakthroughs, the normal EEG has us moving from 3 AEDs to 2 AEDs and weaning off the phenobarbital!
