Honestly, I was looking at all of the cotton PJs in stock right now (at Kohls) and was thinking about using those for a costume. For boys, it's pretty easy since there are spiderman/superman/batman/transformer, etc. PJs out there. But I am guessing not so easy for a girl.
I've made them all so far - nothing fancy though, minimal or no sewing.
DD has been:
fairy, she-devil, black cat, bunny
DS has been:
black cat, monkey
For the fairy and she-devil I made no-sew tutus. For the fairy I stitched little flower trim on a onesie and added some tulle on back for wings (she was not mobile yet, so they had to be comfy to lay on). She-devil = red tutu, red onesie, red tights, black patent shoes, a tail made out of pipe cleaners, and a devil horn hat I made out of felt. Black cat was all black clothes and a knit cat hat from etsy and a black boa for a tail (tied on an adult head band elastic to wear on her waist), and a painted face. Bunny was white leggings, white long sleeved t-shirt with a circle of pink sticky-back felt for a belly and a white craft pom pom sewn on the hem to be her tail with Target bunny ears.
DS as a black cat, was just the hat and a black blanket - but he was 5 days old. Monkey was brown pants, brown onesie with a tan circle of sticky-back felt for the belly and a monkey hat that my mom made with an etsy pattern. (I was dressed as a tree holding him - brown shirt and leaves in my hair)
Obviously I like costumes made from regular clothes. The plastic ones don't do anything for me. However, last year I also bought DD a princess dress from the Halloween selection at Costco. It was about $15 and is decent fabric, nice looking, and has held up well as dress up clothes... she even says she wants to wear it this year for Halloween!

Wow. You seem really creative! Me, not so much.
Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to try to find a dinosaur costume... somewhere! Thanks for the ideas!

There was a cute triceratops at Gymboree last year, but I don't think they have it this year- maybe someone will be selling it on ebay?
I got DDs costume at Baby Gap last year. It was a pink bodysuit with a hat and shoes to complete the pig outfit. Oh, and we also got her a dog costume the previous year on clearance at Target. (we knew we were pregnant but didn't know the sex and bought it for cheap - like 2.50). I'd check Chasing Fireflies or PBK for a dinosaur but they may not be cheap, if that's what you're looking for.

Yah, I need something like that. Ebay and Etsy are my friends today.
MIL made Faith a dino costume when she was a toddler, I know there are lots of patterns out there.
F is being a duck this year (her choice.) I got parts of the costume on ebay and part (clothing) at Target. F is also going to be Lucy to M's Charlie Brown....you know who is making that one!
Yeah, it's not so much about creativity, it's about being cheap and lazy To cheap to buy something expensive or that will tear in 30 minutes and too lazy to sew it from scratch.
Anyway, you could make a dinosaur hoodie like this:
I'd just make it with felt. If you google dinosaur hoodie images, many have teeth sewn around the hoodie with either googly eyes or felt eyes. It seems like something you could make in a night or two in front of the TV, not a complex project. And then you'd have a hoodie he could wear all winter.
And all of a sudden, a dinosaur hoodie sounds like just the thing for DS, lol!
Last year DS was a beaver. He only had two teeth, his top two front teeth, so it seemed like an obvious choice. We bought this costume when it was on sale for $5 and I bought a small piece of pleather and made a beaver tail that I attached over the otter tail. It was super cute and the animal planet brand costumes are really good quality, but they are really too warm for Houston. He only wore it very briefly for pictures.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

Not sure about DD #2 yet. Something easy.

kid to kid is putting out their costumes on saturday, and i plan to look there!
but i think dd1 would be happy wearing her tutu from her dance recital, and dd2 is too young to care...

I'm making it myself. I did the same last year - he was Bam Bam Rubble. I found the fabric and put it together in an hour or so.
If possible, I plan on trying to make costumes. They cost less and look cute. It is much easier for girls, though, I think.
Or check the outlet at Grapevine Mills!
