Two Under 2

If you have a smaller house...

We currently have a 3 bedroom and I'm trying to figure out how we will manage when the new baby gets here, much less sleeping accommodations and noise control.  DS has his room and the 3rd room is a combo playroom/DH office.  When DS was a newborn, I basically slept on the couch in the living room and he slept in a bassinet next to me so I could get up and feed him every 2 hours so DH could sleep since he works, then DS moved to sleeping in his swing until about 7 months.  Looking back, I recall him crying pretty loudly while I was preparing a bottle many times in the middle of the night and I just am worried how this will wake up DS1?

I'm thinking we're probably going to need another diaper changing station in our bedroom to handle night time changes and probably just have DH loose a little sleep by having the new baby in our room so DS1 doesn't hear everything?

Re: If you have a smaller house...

  • We had DS's room and then the office room....then we had DD and she slept in our room for 4 months and then moved into the new nursery. My DH works on a rig, so when he is home he isnt working so that helps. Can you DH sleep on the couch if he really needs to? We have 3 sound machines in our house two in DD's room and 1 in DSs room since they are down the hall. The doors are closed, but you can still hear without the sound machines. They are lifesavers.

  • We also have a 3 bedroom house, the 3rd bedroom is currently an office.  We are planning to get a new smaller desk for our computer and move it to our bedroom, then we can turn it into a 2nd kid's room so they will each have their own room.  Is something like that an option for you?  We will keep LO in our bedroom for a few months, we did the first time too and it really didn't affect DH much.  I'm sure your husband can deal with a little crying (more so than a sleepy toddler).  He also could get ear plugs or something if its an issue.

  • We have a small 1000sq ft 3 bedroom house.  All the rooms are right next to each other.  DH never slept on the couch but barely woke in the middle of the night.  We never used a baby monitor though, I always heard her.  She rarely woke up anyone else in the house, even when she was screaming waiting for me to make her bottle.

  • Get sound machines.

We have two bedrooms and an office. We chose to keep our office and move DD from our bedroom to a shared room with DS. I started putting her down at night in their shared room at 3.5 months old. She was STTN, but since the switch she wakes once most nights. I put DS to bed first with a small, loud fan. Once he's asleep I put DD to bed. When she wakes in the middle of the night I can pick her up and bring her to my room without DS noticing. Prior to room sharing DS would wake up if you so much as touched his bedroom door. Even he was able to adapt to the crying.

  • We currently live in a small 3-BR condo.  The third bedroom is on the main level.  DD2 slept with us until she was 4.5 months old.  We moved her into a PnP into the 3rd BR when she got too noisy to sleep with us.  Her crying never woke up DD1 - but we had a sound machine (this is a MUST with 2u2 - we have two of them).  When she was about 5.5 months and routinely waking only once per night, we moved her into the nursery with DD1.  There was about a four-day adjustment period, but after that DD1 started sleeping through her wake-ups.  Now they both STTN.

  • We have a 3 br house. The kids' rooms are right off the main living area, so sound machines are a must. The boys share a room, and have from the start. Also, the babies have always been in our room for about 3-4 months. I would not have survived a. sleeping on the couch and b. DH not helping in the night. Even though I am home with the kids, I am still working and can not get more sleep during the day.
  • When DD was born, we lived in an 1100sf apartment with an up and down stairs.  Upstairs were the 2 bedrooms, bathroom, and kitchen, and downstairs was the family room, and another bathroom.

DD slept in our room in her bassinet for the first 6 months, and when she would wake up overnight, I would bring her downstairs to get her diaper changed and eat.  DS had a sound machine in his room, and never got disturbed by her.

Could you put another changing station in the living room area?  Good luck!
