Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro and Question

Hi Ladies! I have been lurking on this board for a while now, and figured it was time to introduce myself.  My husband (36) and I (32) have been together for 8 and a half years, and have been married for nearly two.  We have finally decided to start trying to conceive this month (I have been ready for more than a year; however, he is extremely cautious about finances, and took a little bit more time to be ready to jump in! We balance each other out well in these things :)).

I actually have a question as well, and would really appreciate your input!  I tracked my ovulation this month using ovulation tests, which showed positive for four days in a row, starting last Friday, September 2.  We had sex on each of Saturday (but I'm not counting this one as it was a bit iffy), Sunday and Monday.  I am due to start my period on Monday or Tuesday of next week (this estimate is based on my tracking my periods for the past few months, which showed an average 26 day cycle - however there can be pretty significant variations in there).

So I guess my questions are these - first, I think it is clear that I have a very short luteal phase (is that spelled correctly?), given that I will likely commnece my period a mere 9 or 10 days after I SEEM to have first ovulated.  Does this mean that I can't use early pregnancy tests, and that I will have to wait until next week to test do you think?

Also, does anyone have any input on what the positive ovulation tests for four days means?  I have read very different things, including that two eggs might have been released.  Fraternal twins actually run very strongly in my family (they have existed in every generation on my mother's side, as far back as anyone can remember).  But I have also heard that it just means that my LH surge lasted longer, and that I actually only ovulated on Saturday?  This is less than ideal given that our first real "attempt" was on Sunday, so I am admittedly hopeful that there is some other explanation...

Thanks in advance if you have input!  Either way, I look foward to getting to know you ladies :)

Re: Intro and Question

  • Welcome to the board! Charting and recording your temps are really the only way to confirm when and if you ovulated. I would suggest reading the newbie link at the top of the board and checking out Fertility Friend. Just click on "my chart" or anyone's ticker. GL to you!

  • Welcome! 10 days isn't considered a short luteal phase so maybe if you start charting you will see that you're right on target with the normal range for that. That's all I've got but good luck!

  • Thanks Ladies!  I will start charting next month, hopefully that will provide some clarity :)
