I know there are several of us on here and I kind of wanted to "update" everyone, and specifically those who are in similar situations, on DD and her progress. Next week she ages out of ECI so we have been working with the school system since May in anticipation of the transition. She had an eval in May and a follow up last month and she still showed delays but not nearly as significant as before. (I think on one evaluation scale the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 15 so normal range is 85-110 and she scored 82 or 84 so she is getting closer but does qualify for aid from the school district.) Today we had the official "special ed" (called an ARD meeting for admission, review and dismissal) meeting for admission into the programs with the schools. Starting next Wednesday she will be going to speech therapy at the elementary school by our house 2x a week for 2 hours each time. She will ride a bus being picked up and dropped off at daycare. I literally have to enroll her in school now and fill out all of the paperwork that parents do when kids enter kindergarten.
We will re-evaluate things again in May so if she still needs services next school year the decisions on what she needs will be in place and she can start at the actual beginning of the school year. The good thing about her having a September bday is that she actually has 3 years to get "up to speed". It is still a little "strange" tihnking my DD is in special ed but at the same time I am glad we are being proactive. I am sure there are other kids out there where the parents aren't as proactive and while the difference now may be small, it may only get bigger (but then it could get smaller).
Anyways, I know there are several of us so I thought I would share since I *think* DD is one of the older ones so many of you have yet to go through the processes we have done. Feel free to ask any questions.
Re: Who are the other mom's with a DC with speech delays?
I commend you for being so proactive! We have children at my school in 1st and 2nd grades with terrible speech issues, to where you cannot understand what they are saying. My first thought is always, "why did the parents let it get to this point?" Good luck to your DD!
I agree with being proactive. Let me know if you have questions regarding the ARD process. I was a special ed. teacher at one time before getting back into the classroom.
What school is she going to in our district? You can message me if you do not feel comfortable posting it here.
Good luck:)
