Nate's allergy test update

Thanks to everyone for the heads up for the allergy test appointment for Nate.  We only tested for 3 things: dust, pet dander and milk.  He did not test for Soy because he shows no allergic reaction.  It surprised me that the blood work done is only 10% true while skin test is little over 80%. So I went through all that blood work for nothing but I learned a lesson:).  So he is highly allergic to dust and moderate pet.  None for milk.  So I have to give him allergy medicine daily with nasal spray.  Also since we have had been on steroids for breathing we are on Cingular.  I am actually on this medicine and it helps wonders.  So we will see when the weather starts changing if all this works.  I will have to dust and vacuum his room on a weekly basis.  Also buy all those protective covering for the bed and pillows.  He did talk hepa filter but there is no chance we can get that right now.  I just hope we can afford all this protective covering.

So overall good visit and hopefully we can get him on a program that works for him.

Re: Nate's allergy test update

  • Glad his appointment went well. Thanks for your response to my post. I am kind of freaking out right now. Did Nate also have the Immunocap test? Did your allergist really tell you it's only 10% effective? I could kill my pediatrician if that's the case. What's the point in even going through with the blood test!! Our pedi has us going to Georgia Allergy and Immunology. I think his name is Dr. Seidu. Do you mind my asking who your son saw?

  • Walmart has a bunch of the protective covering stuff. I was looking for the waterproof covers this week there and saw a bunch of allergy/dust mite/bed bug cover stuff. You might check there. Interesting to know about the blood test. I always wondered why they went straight to skin testing for ds.

  • Both of my kids had chronic coughs before they were tested and are allergic to those two things among other things. They both take zyrtec and are on nasal sprays. We also covered their mattresses and pillows with the anti-allergen covers. All those things combined have made a huge difference! Nate will feel so much better. Good luck!

  • So glad you had a good visit!  YAY!!!
  • I never really knew this about the blood tests, we go to Atlanta Asthma and Allergy and they did both the blood and sking tests on Kerwin, even when we retest every 6 months to check status we do the blood again. And I just had my daugter tested and they did her skin and blood, weird. BUT the good thing is that at least you have some medicine and answers, once we had that it made a world of difference with asthma and eczema.
  • Glad it went well. I hope this new plan and the meds help give some relief.
