Cloth Diapering

Let's get this board moving. Do people change diapers less often to save $

^This article makes me grateful that we CD and I do not have to worry about changing frequency. Even if I take off a diaper to discover that it is dry, I still wash it so that he gets a fresh one to wear ( I admit that this is extreme germ-phobia)

I do know someone who literally does just what the article is talking about. My sister watches her daughter and she literally gets 4 diaper changes a day. One when she poops in the AM, one in the afternoon, and one when she poops in the PM, and a fresh one for nighttime. Her diaper is always puffed out to an extreme. I even had to lend my sister a CD when she ran out of her allotted diapers for the day. Tongue Tied Yeah, she gets a limit and if she pees too much, too bad.

Thoughts?

  • I used to be like that...well not that extreme. But when my boys were in disposables they'd go way too long in them.

Even now though I don't change DD's cloth diapers more then every 4 hours usually. Unless she poops of course then I change no matter what. But I just don't change every 2 hrs. That's a bit too often for my laziness.

  • I think it's hard to make the assumption based on those numbers alone

  • DD is in sposies at the sitter, she doesn't change em till they are sorta full, or she poops.  At home in cloth I change when she pees, so as often as is necessary to keep her dry.  She goes all night in the same diaper, but she mostly STTN with 1 or 2 feeds and changing her wakes her up too much.

  • Sounds like there's no real research done here, which is good because I really hope their theory is not the case when it comes to disposables.

Four diapers a day is insane! You should tell your sis to CD, if she really wants to save money!

  • My sister does this and it PISSES me off.  Last time they were visiting my niece pooped and my sister wouldn't change her right away because she had "just" put that diaper on her.

So yes, people do this.  Tongue TiedIndifferent

  • My sister had a regular babysitting job for an infant and the parents sat her down to discuss how many diapers she was going through. Tongue Tied

My experience with disposables is they start to stink as soon as they're peed in.  I can't imagine smelling that for hours on end, yuck!

  • Even when I used sposies, if I noticed the diaper was dirty, I changed it.  No one wants to sit in their own pee/poo, so why would you make your child!  DH does not change DS right away in the AM and it drives me nuts.  He  says "well, he always has a big poo right after breakfast, so I will change him then"  Yuck!  I todl him I appriciate him trying to cut down on my laundry, but it's not worth risking DS getting a rash.

  • Yuck, that's gross.  You can still feel the pee, even if all the chemicals have done their job.  I guess people don't care since they personally can't feel it.
  • Wow.  I can't imagine.  I end up changing DS about once every 1.5-2 hours during the day because he has lots of random spurts of fussiness and my first line of defense is to try a diaper change.  Who are these babies who will sit around in a dirty diaper for six hours and not go crazy over it?!

This is similar to us except since I'm new to cloth I'm still trying to figure out when to change and which brand lasts 3-4 hours-ish (unless there is poop)

There's a thread on  9-12 about the same article and I flinched reading the responses and their excuses for not changing more frequently. One poster said their temporary daycare provider checked their diapers every hour and went through 6 diapers. Then proceeded to say that was a waste. Sad
