I am in daycare hell. I started looking for a nanny 1 month ago as I was going back to work Sept 6. I found a nanny, Moyra, and she was supposed to start yesterday. She calls me Sunday night to tell me that she has a family emergency with her grandmother and she has to make an emergency trip to Bolivia and will be gone for 2-3 weeks. She is very apologetic and says that she has arranged for a relative of hers to fill in if I am willing to stick with her. I agreed to meet the temporary nanny in my home, Elise, she seemed fine and I literally was supposed to go to work the next day so I agreed to hire her until Moyra came back.
Monday was a really hectic day so when Elise offered to give me her SS Card, drivers license etc I told her we would deal with that the next day as she would be starting in less than 24 hours. To make a very long story short she never showed up. I didn't have her contact info so I called her reference. She said that Elise has been a very responsible and good nanny and rarely calls in that she can't make it and if she does it is always super early in the morning. They were letting her go because the husband lost his job and the kids were starting school but they were under the impression that Elise was going to stay with them through the end of Sept. Elise had told me that she needed to leave early 2 days next week to finalize with her family and leave on good terms. As of now I have never heard from her.
I started looking again for nannies without much success, I sent out 9 messages yesterday and I only have one interview set up for this weekend. I am really excited about this candidate and as long as she is normal we will offer her to position and hopefully she will take it.
If she doesn't accept the offer would you keep looking? Should I even consider sticking with Moyra, she may be totally unaware of all of the drama? She even called after my interview with Elise to see how it went and seemed very relieved when I said that I had agreed to hire her. What do you think, is Moyra out?
Re: Nanny DRAMA, WWYD?
whoa! what did you decide to do about work - did you go?
I would continue to meet people and if I found a good one, I would hire her permanently. I would tell the out of the country nanny that you are sorry but you couldn't wait.
I would wait to have that convo until she gets back in the country tho. If things don't work out with the new nanny and the timing works out I would hire her back.
Thanks everyone. My parents were able to cover for me on Tues and Wed and my inlaws are covering today and tomorrow. My Mom left today for 2 weeks to my cousin's wedding, talk about bad timing. My Dad can't handle all three kids so if we don't find someone I think my sister's mother-in-law may be able to help my Dad next week. I hope we find someone before then.
I have been using care.com and I am not finding a ton of people that I like and most of the ones that I contacted never respond back. It is so frustrating and time consuming.
