I want to try my son on cloth diapers (delivery isnt until January) so thinking of changing DD to them now as well. She has problems with allergies etc so we have to put creme on all the time and the service I looked into is just as much as what I pay for disposable diapers and more earth friendly obviously. Does anyone use this and if so what do you do with them when you travel/out and about? Just bring a plastic bag with you? Im so clueless when it comes to this and the other thing that stinks is her school wont change cloth so 2x a week she will still have to wear disposable ![]()
TIA
Re: Cloth diapers
We use Gdiapers (which is a big no no on the cloth diapering board). They work for us, and it's cheap to get started (under $200 for a good stash). These diapers also give us the option to use a disposable insert when we are traveling long distances and it's hard to use the cloth. When we go out we have a "wet bag" which is a fancy plastic bag to put the dirty ones in. The good thing about the g's is that you don't have to change the whole diaper each time, just the insert, but some people prefer the ones where you change/wash the entire thing each time. We have a sanitary setting on our washing machine, and I have enough for about 3 days so we just wash ours at home (it's free!). Hope that helps, and BTW it was a HUGE savings to have two of them in cloth.
The school might be open to using the disposable inserts with the covers, I found it helpful to bring them in for a "demonstration" rather than trying to say "I want to use cloth diapers".
I am a CDing mom.
The one thing that struck me in your post is that you have to use creams on your DD. Many popular creams cause build up on CDs and then the CDs aren't as absorbant. It's possible that the service will forbid you to use certain creams since it can ruin their dipes.
I'd really look at that issue first.
RE: school, check to see if they'd fuss w/GroVia or gDiaper disposable inserts like PP said. I love my GroVia but I've never used their disposable inserts (altho I hear good things).
PS- The Bump's CD board is great.. but it can be overwhelming. If you feel overwhelmed, pose questions on a board like this one so you can sort through details with just a couple of people who might not use as many acronyms, etc
I have two in cloth. I agree with PP about finding either a CD safe cream or investing in some good liners. The CD service we used for a while did not allow you to use any creams.
Oh, and try a cloth diaper trial first, to get your feet wet and see what kind of diapers you might like. I thought I would be all gung-ho about prefolds and use a diaper service, and I ended up laundering them myself and using pocket diapers instead.
I use CDs with LO#1. I use BumGenius 4.0s, and I love them. Honestly, I'd say since I've switched to CD, LO#1 rarely ever has a rash that needs cream. If cream is needed, I just some disposable diapers. I haven't found a liner that doesn't bunch up. I do use liners though with the CDs, so it's easier to get rid of poopy messes.
I have two wet bags that I keep in my diaper for dirty diapers. These are the ones I use.
Oh and I wash the CDs at home, and it's so much easier than I ever thought.

The 'best' cloth diaper to start with can really depend on the build of your child. I wouldn't buy a stash of any diaper until you know what is going to work for your child. There are places like Jillian's Drawers that have diaper trials.
When I was first starting out, I did a lot of reading on All About Cloth Diapers. She does reviews on everything related to CDing, including creams. There are creams that are safe for cloth diapers. In fact, some of them blow other creams out of the water. I love, love, love Homestead Baby Balm.
Grovia Review (I've never used them, so I have no idea.)
We wash at home and it isn't a big deal.
Personally, I have an issue with the chemicals in disposables. Plus I love the feel of cloth diapers. I hate wearing pads. I cannot imagine that it feels comfortable to have a disposable on all day.
