What age to get a play kitchen?

I'm looking at toys for Christmas and then for Evan's 2nd birthday (in March) and thought a play kitchen might be a good idea. Most of the ones I have seen say they are for 3+.

At what age did you get your child a play kitchen and did they like it? Any other suggestions for an almost 2-year old?

  • we got Belle hers at about 2and a half. but she was ready for it at 2.  it was her big christmas present that year.   and it's the Target one, and it has held up very nicely.

I say go for it when you think he's ready.  if there are little pieces (choking hazards) that you think need to come off or never go on...go for it.  but belle has been a cooking fool for ages now and the kitchen is one of our constant go to toys.

  • L is getting one for Christmas. She won't quite be 2.
  • DS got his first one when he was around 16 and absolutely adored it. It was just a cheapo one I found NIB at a thrift store. For his bday/xmas present (bday is 12/22/) we're getting him the Step-2 Grand Walk In Kitchen. He loves pretending to cook or eat and we already have a quite a bit of play food. Ikea has some nice soft play food.

  • It is never too early...or late! We gave William a kitchen when he was around 15 months old. It is still the best present he has ever been given. He plays with it daily All the kids who come over flock to it instantly, regardless of age. My younger son loves to open and close the doors, and he practices standing with it a lot.

I LOVE the one we got - it's the KidKraft red retro kitchen. It is not huge, which I like because it is in our living room, and I think it looks nice. I first saw it at WonderWild and thought it would be super expensive. I think I got it online for around $140 or $150 including shipping.

  • I should add that the next best thing he has gotten is a Little Tikes grill. I think it was around $40, and all the kids love it too! My husband grills a lot, and William can't get enough grilling. It comes with food, a little spatula and some tongs. Too cute.

Oh, cool. This is one of the kitchens I was looking at. I found it for $110 on Amazon. Maybe I should buy it now and then just save it for Christmas.

I would get it soon-ish if you want it for Christmas. It was out of stock everywhere around Christmas, and I wasn't able to get it until February. That's a great deal too.

There is a Melissa and Doug set of red wooden kitchen accessories that looks really cute with the kitchen.

  • DD got it before she turned 2 and it was a really good gift. We have a kid kraft one, not the retro but a big one. It's sturdy, but some smaller things we've had issues with - a peg that holds up the oven shelf keeps coming out and we had a door that broke almost immediately and the sink was cracked upon arrival. However they sent us a new door and new sink for free, so extra points for customer service.

Not that you asked, but fwiw, I despise the cheap crappy playfood and pots and pans my MIL bought her - they are almost all broken now. I love the felt play food from ikea as well as their metal pots and pans.

  • I got Noah's at around 18 months- it was that christmas gift. He's loved it!

Here is his first time playing it:

And still does! He and his five year old friend play together at it. I think it's good for all ages!

  • Marion got hers for Christmas last year; she was 2years3months.

However, Eliza plays the HECK out of it!  She's been playing with it nonstop since she could sit up unassisted, so it's never too early!

We got the Educo kitchen  and matching refrigerator and we're so happy with both pieces.  She'll be getting the grill for Christmas this year
