Anyone opting out of the Glucose test?

Re: Anyone opting out of the Glucose test?

  • With both pregnancies I failed the 1 hour and then passed the 3 hour.  To me I want to know if I have a condition that will affect my baby.  If I did have GD I would make sure I changed my diet so I didn't affect my unborn child.  For me I will do anything I can to make sure that little one is ok and I'm doing everything I can to make sure they are well taken care of!

She also laughed and said she wouldn't stop eating sugar anyway because she wasn't going to ignore cravings, etc.

Yeah, because heaven forbid she NOT follow her cravings. Sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation. An increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, respiratory distress syndrome, hypoglycemia leading to seizures, and stillbirth are no match for her carb cravings.

    B. The fasting thing is confusing me ladies.... My info sheet I just got from the doctor today said to "eat normally"... Hmmmmmm.  I'm taking the test, even if I do have to fast and then drink gross juice and then vomit it all up again.  While I don't think people are morons per say for opting out, I agree that we should do all that we can to make sure our pregnancies are progressing normally.  Just think of how happy you will be with yourself when your healthy baby is born.  The thought "you'll never know what I went through to have you," will be quite true.  I would trust your Dr. or Midwife....

  • I completely agree.  While I choose to do this test, I don't judge those who don't.  Why call people stupid and moronic?  I'm sorry but if I posted this completely innocent question and I was having a bad pregnancy day, I would be in tears and never come onto this board again.  We are here to support each other!

  • I opted out of the test. My midwife does a prescreen on all of her patients and I get my glucose checked regularly at appts.

FTR, there is a lot of evidence that actually shows the glucose test needs to only be done on at risk patients. Everyone should have a good focus on diet and exercize during pregancy and be getting frequent glucose checks and dr.s usually don't have time to focus on nutrition during their 10minute appts they have with their patients so they do a blanket screen for everyone & take those results to decide who needs more focus on their diet and who should be getting regular glucose checks.

I also find it kind of insane that you guys can make such ridiculous (and clearly uneducated) remarks about the test like "EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE IT! YOU ARE A TOTAL IDIOT IF YOU DON'T. GEESH".

  • Andplusalso, there is a very high rate of false positives & false negatives with that test. The accuracy of a one time test is questionable at best when they are using that to decide how much care you need to be taking of yourself.

But the fact is, this lovely woman stated that her reason for not taking the test was not because she found a reasonable alternative, but because even if she was found to have it, she would not do snything to change her lifestyle because she had to listen to her cravings!!! I am sorry but that is assinine and selfish!!!!! That attitude is not at all support worthy!

At my last appt. my Dr. sent me home with the drink and a sheet telling me not to eat or drink anything (other than water) for 2 hours, drink the orange drink, and then show up for blood work an hour later.  I'm supposed to do this before my next appt at the end of the month.

After reading all of the stories about people getting sick from it I'm afraid to drink it and drive myself to the Dr. so I'm going to arrange for someone else to take me (and hope we don't get stuck in any traffic).

Are most of you drinking this at your Dr. office and waiting there for that hour?
